Caption No. 3. Poster exhibited in the May Day demonstrations, May 1961, in East Berlin showing NATO soldier marching in the footsteps of the Nazi armies. The German captions on the crosses read, "The same step-the same grave," refer to the outlawing of the Communist Party in Germany in 1918 and the passing of the conscription law by the present West German Government. Beneath the crosses a slogan reads as follows: "Down with BONN, militarism, and compulsory service. We (the Communist) are for disarmament and reconciliation." (Description by Senator Thurmond)

Caption No. 6.

Extract from Mad Comic, 4th annual edition. The distribution of Mad magazine has been restricted in some military commands because of the persistent promotion of antimilitary type stories and drawings which tend to undermine military discipline, generate animosity bettween noncommissioned officers and enlisted men, and commissioned officers and enlisted personnel. While there is normally no objection to some humor about military life, the consistency and the large volume of this type of derogation of the military is found to be objectionable by responsible military commanders. (Description by Senator Thurmond)
