Memoirs of Granville Sharp, Esq

Front Cover
Orchard Clyst, 2006 - 592 pages
This is a new, hardback facsimile edition of Granville Sharp's memoirs, first published in 1820. This edition is complete and unabridged and includes a newly-created index at the back of the book. Granville Sharp (1735 to 1805) is remembered for his tireless work towards the abolition of slavery and the slave trade. In 1772 his campaigning resulted in the historic judgement by Lord Chief Justice Mansfield: "As soon as any slave sets his foot on English ground, he becomes free." Granville went on to help establish a settlement for freed slaves in Sierra Leone. These memoirs were written by a contemporary of Granville's, and are based on Granville's own diaries, letters and writings. The book gives the most complete and fascinating account of his achievements ever written.
