PRELIMINARY OBSERVATIONS.

THE fourth section of our Prophet's second dir.

course, comprised in the third part of these Prophecies, commences with the chapter now before us, and extends throughout the whole of chapter thirty-second. The portion of that beautiful variegated oration to be considered at this time, seems to have been primarily addressed to the Ephraimites and the Jews, at that critical period, wherein alarmed by their dangerous situation, an embally was difpatched by the Israelites into Egypt, requesting the affiftance of that powerful kingdom. In delivering the message wherewith he was intrusted, Ilaiah again admonishes the perfidious people to whom he was sent, of their extreme folly and danger in applying to the Egyptians for that aflistance and defence which they might have had from God, infinitely more wife and powerful. This criminal conduct he sharply reproves, and shews that the salvation of the people of God does not depend on worldly policy, but on divine protection. He then subjoins comfortable assurance of effectual succour being granted to those who, looking above an arm of flesh, VoL, III. А
