DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE

STATEMENT OF HON. CLAUDE R. WICKARD, SECRETARY OF AGRICULTURE

LETTER

FROM THE DEPARTMENT REQUESTING CERTAIN AMENDMENTS

Senator RUSSELL. The committee will come to order. Gentlemen, we have before us H. R. 2481, the Agricultural Department appropriation bill for 1944. I offer for the record the letter of transmittal from the Secretary, together with the formal statement of the Department on the several items of the bill, as well as some tables comparing the 1943 appropriations with the Budget estimates for 1944 and the bill as it comes to us from the House of Representatives. (The letter and enclosures referred to follow:)

Hon. RICHARD B. RUSSELL,

DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE,

Chairman, Subcommittee on Agricultural Appropriations,

United States Senate.

May 7, 1943.

DEAR SENATOR RUSSELL: In response to your letter of April 13, 1943, I am enclosing for the information of your committee tables which set forth the appropriations for 1944 on the basis of the agricultural appropriation bill as passed by the House, and a list of items which were included in the Budget for 1944 as submitted to Congress but which were not included in the bill passed by the House. These are listed in the order of the bill, with an explanatory statement covering each such item.

In view of the vital importance of certain of these matters, a hearing before your committee will be appreciated on such items, in order that we may present more detailed information than is contained in the explanatory notes, which necessarily are somewhat brief. We will be glad to make available any other information which your committee may desire to obtain in its consideration of the agricultural bill.

Sincerely,

Enclosures.

(Signed) CLAUDE R. WICKARD, Secretary..
