us in thought, word, or deed, contrary to thy holy law; and accept of our sincere desires to approve ourselves to thee in all well-doing. It is but just and reasonable that we should follow thy will, and not our own; and, in a grateful sense of what we have received from thee, we ought to employ all our powers of soul and body to thy glory. Such is the goodness of thy will, that it is our ease and pleasure, and greatest happiness, to be absolutely led and governed by it. We are sensible, O Lord, how much we are indebted to thee for teaching us by Christ Jesus, and strongly obliging us to exercise ourselves to all godliness, purity, righteousness, humility, goodness, and truth. We thank thee for his holy example, for the hope thou hast given us by his blood; and for the gracious aids of thy Spirit to help us to follow him, and obey his commands; and for the exceeding great and precious promises which he has given us of immortal life, to encourage us to follow him willingly and cheerfully even unto death. O that we may have a lively and steadfast faith in his word, continually working in our ( hearts, exciting us to unwearied diligence, zeal, and love, and patient continuance in our duty towards thee, and towards all men; that so our hope in thee may grow and increase; that we may joyfully expect that

hour which may translate us to the eternal happiness of the other world.

To thy mercy, O most merciful Father, we commit ourselves, and all that we are and have, this night; beseeching thee to defend and keep us, both in soul and body, from all the evils and dangers to which the weakness of our frame, and the greatness of our sins, expose us. May our frail nature be rcfreshed by comfortable rest, that we may rise again to serve thee better, according to thy will, in all the duties of the following day; and if thou shalt be pleased to give us another day of trial, may we be enabled to add repentance and amendment to our lives; that every day may bring us nearer to those everlasting joys and glories which thou hast prepared for those that love thee. All we ask is in the name of our dear Redeemer, to whom with thyself and Holy Spirit, be ascribed everlasting praises. Amen.

Meditation for Wednesday Morning.

THE GOOD SHEPHERD.

"He shall feed his flock like a shepherd, he shall gather the lambs in his arms, and carry them in his bosom, and gently lead those that are with young."-Isaiah xl. 11.

It is said, he will gather the lambs in his bosom; that is, the young and the weak

HYMN.

The Lord my Shepherd is, I shall be well supply'd; Since he is mine, and I am his, What can I want beside?

He leads me to the place
Where heavenly pasture grows,
Where living waters gently pass,
And full salvation flows.

If e'er I go astray,

He doth my soul reclaim,
And guides me in his own right way,
For his most holy name.

While he affords his aid,
I cannot yield to fear;

Tho' I should walk thro' death's dark shade,
My Shepherd's with me there.

In spite of all my foes,
Thou dost my table spread,

My cup with blessings overflows,
And joy exalts my head.

The bounties of thy love

Shall crown my following days; Nor from thy house will I remove, Nor cease to speak thy praise.

PRAYER

For Wednesday Evening.

O Lord, our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth; who hast set thy glory above the heavens !

When we consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars which thou hast ordained; Lord, what is man that thou art mindful of him? or the son of man that thou visitest him?

For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels; and hast crowned him with glory and honour! What are we, O Lord, and what is our house, so little a part of thy. creation, that, instead of being overlooked or lost amidst the immensity of thy works, we are as much the objects of thy care, and the charge of thy kind providence, as if we were the only creatures of thy power.

It is owing to the constant never-failing display of thy goodness, and tender mercy, O Lord, that we sinners are yet spared to compass thy throne of grace, instead of being trembling criminals at thy bar of judgment! Hadst thou dealt with us as our iniquities have deserved, we had not now been a family worshipping before thee in comfort and hope.

Thou hast made known thyself to us as a God ready to pardon, and not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance !-As a God that hath so loved the world, that thou hast not spared thine only begotten Son, but sent him into the world, and given him to die for us all; that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life! O Lord, we believe, help thou our unbelief! We believe in Jesus, whom thou hast set forth in the gospel, as a propitiation, and as a Prince and a Saviour, to give repentance and remission of sins. And we desire more thoroughly to approve ourselves, sincere unfeigned penitents, that we may obtain, through him, pardon, justification, and eternal life!

"Whatever has been amiss in our temper and conduct, in our behaviour and conversation, through the day past in particular, we beseech thee to overlook and forgive, and graciously accept and bless us this night: for to thee, O Lord, would we devote ourselves and our household, in the most serious and humble sentiments.

Spare us, we beseech thee, O Lord, to another day; and mercifully guard and defend us through this night. Bless to us our slumbers for our comfortable refreshment. Preserve our habitation from harm, and every
