that we are interested in Christ's victory over him, and, through him, are more than conquerors. Christ repelled all the temptations of Satan with, "it is written." The word of God is the sword of the Spirit,-the only offensive weapon in the Christian armour. It is mighty, through God; none like that in our spiritual conflicts. The great thing Satan aims at, is to tempt the children of God to throw off their relation to God as their Father, and, by this means, to cut off their dependance on him, their duty to him, and their communion with him ;-to persuade them that outward afflictions, wants, and burdens, are reasons to question their sonship; as if afflictions could not consist with, when they really proceed from, fatherly love. Christ would not command the stones to be made bread, because he would not do any thing that looked like distrusting his heavenly Father. Those know how to answer Satan's temptation who can say, with holy Job, "though he slay me, yet will I trust in him.' "Behold angels came and ministered unto him!" Behold and rejoice, christian, that though there is a world of wicked, malicious spirits, that fight against Christ and his church, yet so also is there a world of holy and blessed spirits engaged and employed for them. Christ's victories are the angels' triumphs. They come to rejoice with him, and to give him the glory due unto his name. Thus was Christ signalized, and made great in the invisible world, by the voice of the Father, the descent of the Spirit, his victory over devils, and his dominion over angels; thus was he qualified to appear in the invisible world as the Mediator between God and man, and thus is he become the Captain of our salvation. HYMN. For ever blessed be the Lord, When sin and hell their force unite, A friend and helper so divine PRAYER For Saturday Morning. O Lord of all grace, and giver of every good and perfect gift, pour upon us this morning the spirit of grace and supplication, that our hearts, as well as our lips, may be engaged in worshipping, praising, and adoring the Lord of our life, the Father of our mercies, and the God of our salvation in Christ Jesus. As the light of the morning has chased away the shades of night, so, Õ Sun of righteousness! arise upon our souls, and dispel the darkness of ignorance and unbelief from our minds, that we may walk as the children of the light, and of the day. Thou hast said, "He who followeth me, shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life." Draw us and we shall run after thee. The power is thine, O bestow it upon us, that we may live according to thy gospel, and enjoy thy presence, peace, and love. Whatever work we are called to engage in this day, may we remember to serve thee therein, to aim at thy glory in all things, and do nothing contrary to thy will. Gracious Lord, leave us not to ourselves, for it is not in man that walketh to direct his own steps; let us not follow our own na tural spirit; let us not lean to our own understanding, but clothe us with humility, make us watchful over ourselves, and dependant on thee alone to save us from all the evil that surrounds us, and from all that dwelleth in us. It is our undeserved privilege to bear the christian name. O convince us of the danger of resting satisfied with the name, without experiencing the inward life and power of the spirit of Christ upon our souls. For we are assured in thy word, that if we have not the spirit of Christ, we are none of his. Lord, fulfil thy precious promises in us, saying, "I will dwell in them, and walk in them, I will be unto them a God, and they shall be unto me a people; they shall all know me, from the least unto the greatest, for they shall all be taught of God." Make our souls to hunger and thirst after the sweet experience of these blessings. May we ardently long and plead for the enjoyment of these inestimable mercies. Let thy grace be manifest this day in our lives and conversation; make us watchful over ourselves, over our thoughts, words, and actions, watchful against all evil, and watching unto prayer. O God, remind us that thine eyes are ever upon us. Teach us how to use this world as not abusing it, that we may not be slothful in business, but fervent in spirit, serving the Lord! Constrained by thy mercies, may we present ourselves living sacrifices, holy and acceptable through that great High Priest, who ever lives to make intercession for us, and in whom we desire to be found now and for ever. Amen. HYMN. Awake my soul, stretch every nerve, A cloud of witnesses around, 'Tis God's all animating voice, That prize, with peerless glories bright, When victors' wreaths, and monarchs' gems, |
