There were likewise Sacrifices of Expiaition or Atonement, which the Priest made oc
casionally, eitherfor himself or others. One of these Days, we have mention'd before ;
which was the great Fast, or Day of AtoneE: ment, for the Sins of the Nation, committed
in the Course of the whole Year ; and kept i annually upon the tenth Day of the seventh Month. Then it was, that the High-Priest, Lev. xvi. dress'd in all the Robes peculiar to his Order,afrer having offer’d the previous Sacrifices, for himself, and for all the Congregation, took two goats ; and presented them before the LORD, at the door of the tabernacle; and cast lots upon them, one lot for the LORD, and the other lot for the scapegoat, the goat upon which the Lord's lot fell, was offer:d for a fin-offering; but the goat,on which the lot fell to be the

And when he bad made an end of reconciling the holy place, and the tabernacle of the congregation, and the altar ; he was to bring the live goat, and confess over him all the iniquities of the children of Israel, and all their transgreffions in all their fins, putting them upon the head of the goat, and to send him away by the hand of a fit man, into the wilderness : And the goat was to bear upon him all their iniquities, unto a land not inhabited. And in the End of these Prescriptions, is added; And this shall be an everlasting statute unto you, to make an atonement for the children of Israel, for all their fins once a year.

The Trespass-Offering was to be for Le'.vi.1. wilful deliberate Sins, either in offending
God by neglecting his Worship, or injuring their Neighbour by any kind of Fraud or Violence. The offering a Ram
without Blemish. The Blood to be pour'd Lev. vi. out round about the Altar; the Fat to be', &c.
burnt, and the remainder to be eaten by 2. the Priests.
And lastly, the Confecration-Offering, was to be made upon the anointing of any to be a Priest. This is the offering of Aaron and of his fons, which they fall offer unto the LORD in the day when he is anointed; the tenth part of an Ephah of fine flour for a meat-offering perpetual, half of it in the morning, and half thereof at night. And, after the Directions for the preparing it, it is order'd to be wholly burnt ; for every meat-offerring for the priest shall be Lev. vi. wholly burnt, it shall not be eaten : as, for others, it might.
For the Sin-Offering, and the BurntOffering upon this Occasion, special DiErections are likewise given. And, after 0- 14. 18.

right Shoulder of which, were to be burnt; the Breast to be eaten by the Person consecrating, and the Remainder by those that were consecrated. After which, it is said ; This is the law of the burntoffering, and the meat-offering, and of the fin-offering, and of the trespass-offering, and of the consecrations, and of the sacrifice of the peace-offerings; which the LORD commanded Moses in mount Sinai ; in the day that he commanded the children of Israel to offer their oblations unto the LORD, in the wilderness of Sinai.
S E C T. IX.
Other OFFERING S.
There were, besides these, Offerings of several Kinds to be made upon particular Occasions, by way of Purification; too
long to be here enumerated; and which Lev. xii. may better be read in the Book of the xiii. xiv. Law it self.
I shall only observe ; that

Agreeably to which St. Luke relates of the Luke i. blessed Virgin ; That, when the days of her 22. purification, according to the law of Moses, were accomplished, they brought him (the Child Jesus) to Jerusalem, to present him to the LORD: as it is written in the law of the LORD, Every male that openeth the Exod. womb, shall be called boly to the LORD: and xiii. 2,12. offer a sacrifice, according to that which is said in the law of the LORD, a pair of turtle-doves, or two young pigeons.
And because not only they, but their Tents or Houses and Utensils were liable to become unclean by several Accidents, there is a Prescription for making a kind Numb. of Water call'd the Water of Separation;
without being sprinkled with which they I could not be made clean again. This
consisted chiefly of an Infusion of the Afhes of a red Heifer. To which St. Paul alludes in his Epistle to the Hebrews.
