Next to the Priests were the Levites, properly so call’d, by way of Distinction from the Rest of the Ministers of the
Sanctuary. Levites, in one Sense, they 1
were all ; from the High-Priest down to the Door-keeper : as they were descended from Levi. But when God appropriated the Priesthood to Aaron and his Sons, and their Succeffors in the House of Aaron; He diftributed the Rest of the sacred Of fices to the Remainder of the Tribe of Levi: Some of whom were to attend upon and afsift the Priests, in the more laborious and servile Parts of their Function ; and the Rest (of whom we shall speak afterwards) to take care of other Duties relating to either the Tabernacle or Temple.
The former of these, are what we find emphatically stylid Levites. Let us see how the general Institution of them stands. The Numbür. LORD spake unto Moses, saying, Bring the 5. &c. tribe of Levi near, and present them before Aaron tbe Priest, that they may minifter, unJoe
to him. And they hall keep his charge, and the charge of the whole congregation, before the tabernacle of the congregation, to do the service of the tabernacle. And they shall keep all the instruments of the tabernacle of the congregation, and the charge of the children of Israel, to do the service of the tabernacle. And thou shalt give the Levites unto Aaron and to bis fons; they are wholly given unto him out of the children of Israel. And thou Malt appoint Aaron and his sons, and they fall wait on their Priest's Office: And the stranger (who is not of the Tribe of Levi) that cometh nigh shall be put to death.
Their Number, at that time, was Two --- 22.28. and twenty thousand and three hundred.
They were to encamp about the four Quarters of the Tabernacle, and had the respective Duties allotted them under their feve, ral Chiefs. And Levi having had three Sons, Gershon, * Kohath, and Merari, the Levites were number'd, and assign'd to their pro
