their hands; and they cry with a great voice, saying,

Salvation unto our God who sitteth on the throne, and unto the Lamb.

And all the angels were standing round about the throne, and about the elders and the four living creatures; and they fell before the throne on their faces, and worshipped God, saying.

Amen: Blessing, and glory, and wisdom, and thanksgiving, and honor, and power, and might, be unto our God for ever and ever. Amen.

I. EPISTLE (b), Revelation 7. 9-17. The Innumerable Multitude before the Throne.

A

FTER these things I saw, and behold, a great multitude, which no man could number, out of every nation and of all tribes and peoples and tongues, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, arrayed in white robes, and palms in their hands; and they cry with a great voice, saying,

Salvation unto our God who sitteth on the throne, and unto the Lamb.

And all the angels were standing round about the throne, and about the elders and the four living creatures; and they fell before the throne on their faces, and worshipped God, saying,

Amen: Blessing, and glory, and wisdom, and thanksgiving, and honor, and power, and might, be unto our God for ever and ever. Amen.

And one of the elders answered, saying unto me, These that are arrayed in the white robes, who are they, and whence came they?

And I say unto him, My lord, thou knowest.

And he said to me, These are they that come out of the great tribulation, and they washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. Therefore are they before the throne of God; and they serve him day and night in his temple: and he that sitteth on the throne shall spread his tabernacle over them. They shall hunger no more, neither thirst any more; neither shall the sun strike upon them, nor any heat: for the Lamb that is in the midst of the throne shall be their shepherd, and shall guide them unto fountains of waters of life: and God shall wipe away every tear from their eyes.

and he opened his mouth and taught them, saying,

Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.

Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.

Blessed are they that hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.

Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.

Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.

Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called sons of God.

Blessed are they that have been persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are ye when men shall reproach you, and persecute you, and say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets that were before

you.

EPISTLE, Hebrews 12. 1-3. The Cloud of Witnesses. THEREFORE let us also, seeing we are

compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising shame, and hath sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. For consider him that hath endured such gainsaying of sinners against himself, that ye wax not weary, fainting in your souls.

II. GOSPEL, Matthew 5. 13-16. The Salt of the Earth and the Light of the World.

YE

E are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost its savor, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out and trodden under foot of men.

Ye are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a lamp, and put it under the bushel, but on the stand; and it shineth unto all that are in the house. Even so let your light shine before men; that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.

III. EPISTLE, Revelation 14. 1-3.

The Saints Serving God before the Throne.

AND I saw, and behold, the Lamb stand

ing on the mount Zion, and with him a hundred and forty and four thousand, having his name, and the name of his Father, written on their foreheads.

And I heard a voice from heaven, as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of a great thunder: and the voice which I heard was as the voice of harpers harping with their harps: and they sing as it were a new song before the throne, and before the four living creatures and the elders: and no man could learn the song save the hundred and forty and four thousand, even they that had been purchased out of the earth.

GOSPEL, Luke 6. 20-26.
Blessings and Woes.

AND he lifted up his eyes on his disci

ples, and said, Blessed are ye poor: for yours is the kingdom of God. Blessed are ye that hunger now: for ye shall be filled. Blessed are ye that weep now: for ye shall laugh. Blessed are ye, when men shall hate you, and when they shall separate you from their company, and reproach you, and cast out your name as evil, for the Son of man's sake. Rejoice in that day, and leap for joy: for behold, your reward is great in heaven; for in the same manner did their fathers unto the prophets.

But woe unto you that are rich! for ye have received your consolation. Woe unto you, ye that are full now! for ye shall hunger. Woe unto you, ye that laugh now! for ye shall mourn and weep. Woe unto you, when all men shall speak well of you! for in the same manner did their fathers to the false prophets.

FIRST DAY OF PRAYER. Repentance.

[blocks in formation]

O Israel, hope in Jehovah;

For with Jehovah there is lovingkindness,

And with him is plenteous redemption.
And he will redeem Israel
From all his iniquities.

GOSPEL, Matthew 11. 20-24.
Woes Pronounced upon the Impenitent.
THEN began he to upbraid the cities

wherein most of his mighty works were done, because they repented not.

Woe unto thee, Chorazin! woe unto thee, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works had been done in Tyre and Sidon which were done in you, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. But I say unto you, it shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon in the day of judgment, than for you.

And thou, Capernaum, shalt thou be exalted unto heaven? thou shalt go down unto Hades: for if the mighty works had been done in Sodom which were done in thee, it would have remained until this day. But I say unto you that it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment, than for thee.

GOSPEL, Matthew 11. 25-30. The Way of God.

T that season Jesus answered and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that thou didst hide these things from the wise and understanding, and didst reveal them unto babes: yea, Father, for so it was wellpleasing in thy sight.

All things have been delivered unto me of my Father: and no one knoweth the Son, save the Father; neither doth any know the Father, save the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son willeth to reveal him.

Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

THIRD DAY OF PRAYER. Missions.

Collect. Almighty God, we pray Thee, quicken Thy Church to serve Thee and to extend Thy Kingdom throughout the earth, so that all peoples may see Thy salvation and Thy name may be glorified from the rising of the sun even unto the going down thereof; through Thy Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with Thee and the Holy Spirit, world without end. AMEN.

EPISTLE, Psalm 96. 1-10.

The Lord Is King of the Nations.

OH

H sing unto Jehovah a new song: Sing unto Jehovah, all the earth. Sing unto Jehovah, bless his name; Show forth his salvation from day to day.

Declare his glory among the nations, His marvellous works among all the peoples.

For great is Jehovah, and greatly to be praised:

He is to be feared above all gods.
For all the gods of the peoples are idols;
But Jehovah made the heavens.
Honor and majesty are before him:
Strength and beauty are in his sanc-
tuary.

Who redeemeth thy life from destruction;

Who crowneth thee with lovingkindness and tender mercies;

Who satisfieth thy desire with good things,

So that thy youth is renewed like the eagle.

GOSPEL, Romans 11. 33-36.

The Unsearchable Wisdom of God. THE depth of the riches both of the wisdom and the knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past tracing out! For who hath known the mind of the Lord? or who hath been his counsellor? or who hath first given to him, and it shall be recompensed unto him again? For of him, and through him, and unto him, are all things. To him be the glory for ever. Amen.

The Passion of Our Lord

As Recorded by the Four Evangelists

FIRST PART.

Jesus among His Disciples at Jerusalem Prior to His Suffering and Death.

1. Preparation for the Passover.

Now

THE FEAST of unleavened bread drew nigh, and Jesus said unto his disciples, Ye know that after two days the feast of the Passover cometh; and the Son of man is delivered up to be crucified.

Then were gathered together the chief priests and the scribes, and the elders of

the people, unto the court of the high priest, who was called Caiaphas, and they took counsel together that they might take Jesus by subtlety, and put him to death. But they said, Not during the feast, lest a tumult arise among the people; for they feared the people.

And Satan entered into Judas who was called Iscariot, he that was one of the twelve. And he went away, and communed with the chief priests, and captains, how he might deliver him unto them. And they when they heard it, were glad, and promised and covenanted to give him money. He consented, and they weighed unto him thirty pieces of silver. And from that time he sought opportunity how he might conveniently deliver him unto them in the absence of the multitude.

Now on the first day of unleavened bread, on which the passover must be sacrificed, the disciples came to Jesus, saying unto him, Where wilt thou that we go and make ready for thee to eat the passover? And he sent two of his disciples, Peter and John, saying, Go and make ready for us the passover, that we may eat. Go into the city, and behold, there shall meet you a man bearing a pitcher of water; follow him into the

with them? And he will show you a large upper room furnished: there make ready for us. The disciples went forth, and came into the city, and did as Jesus appointed them; and they made ready the passover.

2. The Passover Celebrated and the Lord's Supper Instituted.

WHI

WHEN it was evening and the hour was come, he sat down at meat with the twelve disciples; and as they were eating, he said unto them, With desire I have desired to eat this passover with you before I suffer: for I say unto you, I shall not eat it, until it be fulfilled in the kingdom of God. And he received a cup, and when he had given thanks, he said, Take this, and divide it among yourselves: for I say unto you, I shall not drink from henceforth of the fruit of the vine, until the kingdom of God shall come.

And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed, and when he had given thanks he brake it; and he gave to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body, which is given for you; this do in remembrance of me. And he took a cup in like manner after supper, and when he had given thanks, he gave to them, saying, Drink ye all of it; for this cup is the new covenant in my blood, even that which is poured out for you; this do, as often as ye drink it, in remembrance of me. And they all drank of it.
