UNITED STATES OF AMERICA Preface HIS VOLUME is designed to serve as a record of the official particiTpation of the United States Government in multilateral international conferences and meetings of international organizations during the period July 1, 1955-June 30, 1956. A list of the conferences and meetings will be found in the appendix. Data regarding conference proceedings and decisions, principal officers of the conferences, attendance at the conferences, and the composition of the United States delegations will be found in accounts relating to several major conferences and meetings. The selection of conferences to be reviewed in this volume, while attempting to include those of major significance and importance, is not meant to overlook the programs or activities of those organizations whose meetings could not be reviewed here because of the lack of space. An effort has been made to include conferences which also will give an indication of the range of United States participation in international meetings, the various types of meetings, the variety of United States representation, and which will serve as an example of the types of functions in which some of the less publicized meetings and organizations engage. Sessions of the principal organs of the United Nations are not included in this volume. Information regarding United States participation in the United Nations may be found in the annual reports of the President to the Congress, published by the Department of State under the title United States Participation in the United Nations. The record of participation of the United States Government in international conferences since July 1, 1932, may be found in the volumes of two series of Department of State publications: (1) Participation of the United States Government in International Conferences, a series which covers the period since July 1, 1941; and (2) American Delegations to International Conferences, Congresses and Expositions and American Representation on International Institutions and Commissions with Relevant Data, a series which covers the period from July 1, 1932, through June 30, 1941. Other sources of background and information concerning international conferences and organizations include the Department of State Bulletin, a weekly publication containing information on nearly every phase of international activity in which the United States Government participates; International Organizations in Which the United States Participates, 1949, Department of State publication 3655, which contains data on the origin and development, membership, functions, structure, finances, and status of international organizations; International Organization, a quarterly published by the World Peace Foundation, Boston, Mass.; Yearbook of International Organizations, published by the Union of International Associations, Brussels, Belgium; the periodicals of various international organizations, such as the Chronicle of the World Health Organization; and the journals of legal, scientific, medical, and other professional societies. Many of the international organizations are commonly referred to by their initials or may even be better known by their initials than by their full titles.
