VISIT TO MOUNT SINAI, &c.

WHEN I visited the East in 1859-60, accompanied by Mrs. Gadsby, as recorded in "My Wanderings," Vol. II., I had no idea that I should ever see that part of the world again. And certainly I had no desire to do so; for, though everything which can tend to the comfort of travellers is being more and more introduced every year, and though, from my knowledge of the people and place, I am almost at home in Egypt, there are still annoyances enough to outweigh all, to say nothing of having again to leave a comfortable home. And not only so; but it seemed to me that I had turned over every stone, both in and out of my way, in search of information, and that there, was not another idea or "illustration "to be got. I have no doubt there was, however; but I had plucked, and raked, and gleaned to the extent of my capacity, so far as I could then see, and could go no farther.

When, therefore, my medical advisers, during the autumn of 1863, not merely recommended, but almost compelled me to leave home again, my old pulmonary symptoms having reappeared, I can say in all sincerity that I never in my life obeyed so reluctantly, a fact to which the various members of my family can bear testimony; and even when I had taken my ticket at
