in the day of diftrefs. For THE DAY OF "JEHOVAH is near upon all the heathen: as thou "haft done, it fhall be done unto thee: thy reward "fhall return upon thine own head. For as ye have "drunk upon my holy mountain, fo fhall all the "Heathen drink continually, yea, they fhall drink "and they fhall fwallow down, and they shall be as "though they had not been." Obad. ver. 10-16.

The New Teftament teftifies the fame truths. It would be of no use, however, to quote the New Teftament to any who are not difpofed to believe the folemn affertions of the Books of Mofes and the prophets; for our bleffed Lord himfelf hath faid, "If they hear not MOSES and the PROPHETS, "neither will they be perfuaded though one rofe "from the dead," Luke xvi. 31. but to us who do

believe

believe in the divine authority of the Books of Mofes and the prophets, it is á ftrong confirmation of our faith as Chriftians, that the New Teftament fpeaks the fame as the Books of Mofes and the prophets; "When the Son of man fhall come in his glory, " and all the holy angels with him, then fhall he fit "upon the throne of his glory: and before him fhall "be gathered ALL NATIONS; and he fhall "separate them one from another, as a fhepherd "divideth his fheep from the goats and he fhall set "the fheep on his right hand, but the goats on the

left. Then fhall the King fay unto them on hist "right hand, Come, ye bleffed of my Father, in"herit the kingdom prepared for you from the "foundation of the world: for I was an hungred, "and ye gave me meat: I was thirfly, and ye gave "me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in: "naked, and ye clothed me: I was fick, and ye "vifited me: I was in prifon, and ye came unto Then fhall the righteous anfwer him, faying, "Lord, when faw we thee an hungred, and fed thee? a ftranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee? Or when faw we thee fick, or in "prifon, and came unto thee? And the king fhall "anfwer and fay unto them, Verily I fay unto you,

❝ me.

Inafmuch as ye have done it unto one of the leaft "of thefe MY BRETHREN, ye have done it unto Then shall he fay also unto them on the left "hand, Depart from me, ye curfed, into everlasting "fire, prepared for the devil and his angels: for I

was an hungred and ye gave me no meat: I was "thirfty, and ye gave me no drink: I was a stranger, "and ye took me not in: naked, and ye clothed me "not: fick, and in prifon, and ye vifited me not. "Then fhall they alfo anfwer him, faying, Lord, "when faw we thee an hungred, or athirst, or a Atranger, or naked, or fick, or in prison, and did

not minister unto thee? Then fhall he answer them, "faying, Verily I fay unto you, Inasmuch as ye "did it not to one of the leaft of thefe, ye did it not "to me. And these fhall go away into everlasting "punishment: but the righteous into life eternal." Matt. xxv. 31-46.

Let us then feek FAITH from him who is the author and finisher of our faith, Heb. xii. 2. that we may give glory unto JEHOVAH our God, by confeffing the juftice and righteousness of his ways to Ifrael his people, and to all the nations of the earth; and when we read the question recorded in the 29th chapter of Deuteronomy: "Even all nations fhall "fay, Wherefore hath JEHOVAH done thus unto "this land? What meaneth the heat of this great "anger?" Let us with all our heart and all our fout reply, in the words recorded for OUR ufe, by Mofes the fervant of God, and fay, both in respect to Ephraim and the tribes of Ifrael his fellows, and Judah and the children of Ifrael his companions, Ezek. xxxvii. 16, 19. for the whole of the Jewish nation are included: it was, "Because they have "forfaken the COVENANT of JEHOVAH, THE "GOD OF THEIR FATHERS, which he made with

"them when he brought them forth out of the land "of Egypt: for they went and ferved other gods, "and worshipped them, gods whom they knew not, "and whom he had not given unto them." It was because of these things, that "the anger of JEHOVAH

was kindled against this land, to bring upon it all "the curfes that are written in this book: and "JEHOVAH rooted them out of their land in anger, "and in wrath, and in great indignation, and caft "them into another land, as it is this day." Deut. xxix. 24-28. When this confeffion is made with the whole heart and foul, those who make it will be enabled to cry for deliverance from fimilar national afflictions as Ifrael hath endured! An awful day approaches: "I will fhew wonders (faith JEHO"VAH) in the heavens and in the earth, blood, and "fire, and pillars of smoke. The fun fhall be "turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, "before the great and terrible day of JEHOVAH

come. And it fhall come to pass, that WHO"SOEVER fhall call on the NAME OF JEHO"VAH fhall be delivered: for in Mount Zion and "in Jerufalem fhall be deliverance, as JEHOVAH "hath faid, and in the remnant whom JEHOVAH "fhall call. For behold, in THOSE DAYS, and "in THAT TIME, when I fhall BRING AGAIN "the captivity of Judah and Jerufalem, I will also "gather ALL NATIONS, and will bring them "down into the valley of Jehofhaphat, and will "plead with them there for my people, for Ifrael "mine inheritance." Joel ii. 30-32. iii, 1, 2.

Long-fuffering is indeed an attribute of JEHOVAH OF HOSTS, the God of Ifrael; long, very long, did he bear with the provocations of the Jewish nation; but when the day of vifitation comes, when the meafure of iniquity is filled up, then ANCIENT, as well as recent provocations are vifited. The great national fin of the GOLDEN CALF hath, I conceive, had more weight in the long-continued depreffion of the Jewish nation, than is generally imagined. It was in a great measure paffed by, through the long-fufferance of their merciful and gracious God, who regarded the interceffion of Mofes his fervant, and faid, "Behold mine angel SHALL go before "thee;"-but thefe awful words follow, "NEVER"THELESS, IN THE DAY WHEN I VISIT, "I WILL VISIT THEIR SIN UPON THEM.” Exod. xxxii. 34. When Samaria, after its siege of three years, was taken, the awful day of vilitation feems to have taken place, as far as Ephraim and the tribes of Ifrael his fellows were the objects. When Jerufalem was befieged by Titus, the awful day of visitation seems to have arrived, as far as Judah and the children of Ifrael his companions were concerned: "In the day when I vifit, I will visit their fin upon "them :" is there any contradicting this? I conceive that there is not. We are not referring to the SOULS of the sufferers; with refpect to them it is clear that it is only the foul that finneth that fhall die: "the "Son fhall not bear the iniquity of the father, "neither fhall the father bear the iniquity of the fon," Ezek. xviii. 20. What we are speaking of is

national
