land of their fathers, is fo clearly defined, and fo eafily walked in, that it is next to an impoffibility for them to miftake it, if they inquire "the way to Zion with "their faces thitherward." Jere. 1. 5.

As to the TIME when they will inquire "the way. "to Zion with their faces hitherward," in the 30th chapter of Deuteronomy, it is clearly revealed that it is not until the good and the evil, the bleffing and the curfe, that Mofes, the fervant of God, fet before them, fhould have come upon them, that their bleffed restoration will commence. The bleffing promised was bestowed upon them, for " JEHOVAH gave unto

Ifrael all the land which he fware to give unto "their fathers; and they poffeffed it, and dwelt "therein. And JEHOVAH gave them reft round "about, according to all that he fware unto their fa"thers: and there ftood not a man of all their enemies "before them; the Lord delivered all their enemies

into their hand. There failed not ought of any "good thing which the Lord had spoken to the house "of Ifrael; all came to pafs." Jofh. xxi. 43-45. The accomplishment of prophecy is one of the main pillars on which the house of faith is fupported, and Joshua avails himself of it at the close of his ministry, Jofh. xxiii. 14-16. as Mofes, the fervant of God, had done before him: "Behold, this day I am going "the of all the earth and ye know in all your way "hearts and in all your fouls, that not one thing hath "failed of all the good things which JEHOVAH YOUR "GOD fpake concerning you; all are come to pass "unto you, and not one thing hath failed thereof.

"Therefore

Therefore it fhall come to pafs, that as all good "things are come upon you, which JEHOVAH YOUR "GoD promifed you; fo fhall JEHOVAH bring upon

you all evil things, until he have deftroyed you

from off this good land which JEHOVAH YOUR "GOD hath given you. When ye have tranfgreffed "THE COVENANT OF JEHOVAH YOUR GOD, "which he commanded you, and have gone and "ferved other gods, and bowed yourfelves to them; then fhall the ANGER OF JEHOVAH be kindled "against you, and ye fhall perish quickly from off

the good land which he hath given unto you." They did tranfgrefs, and though he long bare with them, fending his fervants the prophets to them, to admonish and comfort them, and pitied them as a father doth a beloved fon; yet at laft the day of their vifitation came, and they were dispersed

among all nations," and continue fo to be even unto this day, in fulfilment of the prophecy of Mofes, the fervant of God, Deut xxx. 1. and they have long continued thus difperfed, as Mofes, the fervant of God, declared that their fufferings fhould be great and of "LONG CONTINUANCE," Deut. xxviii. 59. The accomplishment of the prophecies are the main pillars upon which the houfe of faith is fupported; and here we have to obferve another of thefe pillars, which ftand firm as the foundations of the earth, and fuftain the beauteous fabric built thereon (all in one fhort verfe of the last Book of Mofes, the worth of whofe writings are beyond all price). In this precious, verse the first step towards Zion is clearly defined; it is

merely

merely the mental act of calling thefe things to remembrance! Is any thing more easy than this? The words are all prepared, I have quoted the very words of Joshua, as to the acknowledgment of the faithfulnefs of the Lord God of Ifrael, in keeping his promise, and bestowing upon their nation thofe good things which he promised them.

Now let me entreat my fellow Chriftians, especially those who are members of the Miffionary and London Societies, to confider this prophecy of the firft ftep to the restoration of national bleffings to the Jews. It is merely the act of the mind, an act which may be by any individual of the Jewish nation performed, as far as he is individually concerned, in his closet, or when he is fitting in his houfe, walking in the way, or when he is lying down or rifing up, Deut. vi. 7. It is merely the act of the foul, an act whereby he gives glory to his God by acknowledging his faithfulness, in performing his promifes; but is there any intimation that they are to be as it were driven to do this act by the exhortation of any of the Gentile nations? There is not; and in fact the point which the Miffionary and London Societies have fo zealously endeavoured to urge them to confider, is not this: but if the Lord hath clearly pointed out the way in which his people are to return unto Zion, they furely cannot do better than to walk in that path.

Thus far we have no reafon to confider the time as remote in which their restoration to national bleffings will commence, for they are among the nations whither JEHOVAH their God hath driven them, and

they

they are capable of reflection. The Lord God of Ifrael is a gracious and merciful God; he doth not require his creatures to do that which he doth not give them ability to perform. "I will proclaim the name of "JEHOVAH: afcribe ye greatnefs unto our God. "He is the rock, his work is perfect for all his "ways are judgment: a God of truth and without "iniquity, juft and right is he." Deut. xxxii. 3, 4.

We will in the next place proceed to the confideration of the second step the Jewish nation are to take in the way to Zion. Every Jew who acknowledges the faithfulness of JEHOVAH, his God, hath his face towards Zion, and hath only to walk ftraight forwards. The fecond ftep follows as a neceffary confequence of the first step being taken; for if by meditation on the bleffings their nation hath received, they acknowledge the FAITHFULNESS OF JEHOVAH, their God, in performing those promises which he gave unto Abraham, and Ifaac, and Jacob, their fathers; does it not follow as a neceffary confequence that there must be good caufe why they have experienced a REVERSE. Could any human power prevail against a people fo highly favoured by the Great Creator of heaven and earth, the God of Ifracl? Could any nation under heaven hurt even an hair of the head of

a fingle Jew, Dan. iii. 27. Luke xii. 7. without permiffion, nay more than permiffion, from him who divided the fea for their deliverance, and overthrew Pharaoh and his hoft in the fea, even in the Red Sea? Impoffible!

"I will

"I will fing unto JEHOVAH, for he hath triumphed "glorioufly: the horfe and his rider hath he thrown "into the fea. JEHOVAH is my ftrength and fong, "and he is become my falvation: he is my God, "and I will prepare him an habitation; my father's "God, and I will exalt him. JEHOVAH is a man "of war: JEHOVAH is his name. Pharaoh's cha"riots and his hoft hath he caft into the fea: his "chofen captains alfo are drowned in the Red-fea. "The depths have covered them: they fank into the "bottom as a ftone. Thy right hand, O JEHOVAH, is become glorious in power: thy right hand, O JEHOVAH, hath dashed in pieces the enemy. And "in the greatnefs of thine excellency thou haft over"thrown them that rofe up against thee: thou fentest "forth thy wrath, which confumed them as ftubble. "And with the blaft of thy noftrils the waters were "gathered together, the floods ftood upright as an "heap, and the depths were congealed in the heart

of the fea. The enemy faid, I will purfue, I will ❝ overtake, I will divide the spoil; my luft shall be "fatisfied upon them; I will draw my fword, my "hand fhall deftroy them. Thou didft blow with "thy wind, the fea covered them: they fank as lead

in the mighty waters. Who is like unto thee, O "JEHOVAH, among the gods? who is like thee, "glorious in holinefs, fearful in praifes, doing won"ders? Thou ftretchedft out thy right hand, the earth "fwallowed them. Thou in thy mercy haft led forth "the people which thou haft redeemed: thou haft guided
