into any particular examination of those doctrines and paffages in the articles and liturgy, which I think the most exceptiona ble; as fuch a difcuffion would have led us into too large a field. At prefent, I have endeavoured, from more enlarged principles, to fhew the propriety of the late application to parliament, for fome relief in the matter of ecclefiaftical fubfcription. And what weight there may have been in the arguments which I have offered, you must judge for yourself. fhall only add, that whatever fecular purposes may be answered by affuming such a dominion over the faith of Chriftians, as the impofition of human creeds and articles of belief, it is to me extremely evident, that the cause of real religion can derive no advantages from it. Error, bigotry, and priestcraft, may require these fupports; but truth and genuine Christianity difdain I and frequently carried on in a manner fo little, agreeable to the genuine fpirit of Christianity, that many fenfible perfons are apt to conceive a distaste against every production of that kind.
