the burning waves of the lake of unquenchable fire, seeking rest, but finding none for ever. No rest for ever! Oh, I cannot plead coldly with you in such a cause as this. Once again, then, before I leave you, I would beseech of you to come even now to the Lord Jesus Christ, who is both willing and able to save you to the uttermost. Yes, surrender yourself up to Him freely, fully, unreservedly, as your Priest to atone, as your Intercessor to plead for you, your Prophet to teach, and your King to rule over you-your wisdom, your righteousness, your sanctification, your redemption; and you, who have so long spread misery around you on earth, will this day spread joy throughout heaven; for "there is joy among the angels of God over one sinner that repenteth;" yea, and the God of angels will rejoice over you, and call upon the heavenly host to share His joy, saying to them, "Rejoice, rejoice with me; for this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found."

And now, in conclusion, would I address some parting words of exhortation to you, who, after having long wandered, like the dove of old, over a world deluged with sin and sorrow, and found in it no resting place, have been at last, by the merciful hand of God,

taken into that ark of peace, where you are sheltered in safety from the flood of wrath poured out on the world of the ungodly, and enjoy a holy, heavenly rest-a rest from the terrors of an accusing conscience, the fear of an offended God, the tossings of feverish desire, and the storms of guilty passions; a pledge and foretaste of heaven's eternal rest. Be much in prayer; the prayer of faith; the prayer of the heart; humble, affectionate, persevering. Remember that the flame of divine love which has been kindled in your breast by the Spirit of God, will soon be damped by the chilling atmosphere of earth, unless it be continually cherished by the breath of the Spirit by which it first was kindled; and it is by fervent prayer you must draw down the vivifying, and cheering, and sanctifying influences of that blessed Spirit! and as you value that peace of God which indeed

passeth all understanding”—that present inward heaven opened in the believer's souland the glory of Him whose you are, and not your own-for He has bought you with a price-(believer, remember what price!)—Oh, make it the subject of your most earnest sup, plications to the throne of grace, that while trusting simply and undividedly in the finished work of Calvary for acceptance with an infi

nitely holy God, you may be enabled to testify your grateful reliance on that finished work, by the unreserved consecration of your whole heart and life to the Author and Finisher of your faith; that you may be delivered at once from the penalty of sin by the blood, and from the power of sin by the Spirit of Christ; and that your love to Him who so loved you, his life for you, may not be allowed to evaporate in empty profession, or waste itself in unprofitable excitement, but, through the power of the Holy Spirit, may become increasingly a steady, abiding, influential principle, bringing by its sweetly-constraining energy, every imagination and desire, every thought, word, and action, into captivity to the Gospel of Christ, binding every renewed faculty and consecrated affection round his cross, and stamping upon all within, that meets the eye of God, and all without, that meets the eye of man, the impress of that "holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord ;" and as the pattern of that holiness, look continually to the character of Him, in whom the glory of the Godhead shines, in softened splendour, through a veil of flesh, and the perfections of the divine nature, are adapted to our comprehension, and endeared to our affections, by being embodied

in a human form, with all the touching tenderness and attractive sympathies of one who, having been himself a man of sorrows, " can be touched with a feeling of our infirmities,” and having in our own nature exhibited, in unsullied, though milder radiance, the divine beauty of holiness," has left us an example that we should follow His steps," and walk even as He walked, while He tabernacled upon earth; ever keeping in mind, that the life of Jesus, while He sojourned in our world, was the life of "God manifest in the flesh"-" God with us."

Labour then I beseech of you, in the strength of your God, to become every day more and more conformed to the image of your divine Redeemer to tread more closely in His sacred footsteps-to drink more deeply into His pure and peaceful Spirit! This growing resemblance to your Saviour is the surest test by which the infallible word of God warrants you to conclude that you are indeed one with Christ!-a living branch of the true vine !— deriving from your union with Him, vitality and nourishment-and thus enabled to bring forth the fruits of righteousness, and true holiness! All other criteria may deceive!—a warm imagination may supply the enthusiast for a time with a heated fervour in feverish de

votion-and the wild fire of a fiercely-burning zeal!-he may mistake the visions of his own fancy for the revelations of his God-he may even weep at the detail of Jesus' sufferings, as he has often wept over a sentimental tale of fictitious sorrow, and all the time his conscience remain unawakened-his heart unchanged!his soul unrenewed, and his life unholy! But so opposed is the character of Jesus to our natural depravity-His meekness to our prideHis resignation to our repining-His disinterestedness to our selfishness-His purity to our pollution-His forgivingness to our vindictiveness-His heavenly-mindedness to the earthliness of our tastes and affections, and desires, that a growing conformity to His character cannot spring from any source but one-it bears on it the stamp of heaven-it has impressed on it "the image and superscription of God!"

He who has this witness in himself-even the Spirit of Christ dwelling within him—may indeed indulge the delightful hope that he has passed from death to life! that there is no condemnation to him, as being in Christ Jesus, walking not after the flesh, but after the Spirit; and that "when Christ who is his life shall appear, he also shall appear with Him in glory." And tell me, oh, believer, you, in
