THE following Poems, chiefly epigrammatical, were selected by the Editor from publications of acknowledged celebrity; if he can claim any merit in submitting them to the Public, it consists in a studious endeavour to avoid the insertion of the common hackneyed trash which generally abounds in works of a similar description: his pretensions, however, must be left to the decision of his Readers. That vanity which is the primum mobile of all our hearts has induced the Editor to intersperse, in this selection, a few original trifles, the production of his leisure hours: should they be deemed deficient in merit, he has no other apology to offer, except that at the time of their composition he was assailed by that disease so common to small poets-the furor scribendi ; Which makes them, though it were, in spite |
