The Air Force has contracted to purchase three C-5 cockpit procedures trainers from Hydrosystems Division of Gould, Inc., Melville, New York, to support MAC's training requirements. The cockpit procedures trainer (or CPT) is essentially a simplified version of the existing C-5 mission flight simulators (or MFS) now in use at Dover AFB, Del., Altus AFB, Okla. and Travis AFB, Calif.

At present, much of the training time on the mission flight simulator is taken up by training for ground operations and normal and emergency procedures drills which do not require the full capability of this sophisticated system. The CPT, unlike the mission flight simulator, will not simulate actual aircraft motion, aircraft navigation across the ground, visual presentation, or the full range of instrument performance. It will, however, provide a complete replica of the C-5 cockpit crew stations (as well as instructor stations). All controls, switches and displays necessary for ground and in-flight normal operating procedures, aircraft systems operation, and all emergency procedures, both ground and air, will be provided. In addition to monitoring student actions, the instructors will be able to simulate for the student various in-flight situations, including different flight conditions and relevant symptoms of a wide range of aircraft system failures and malfunctions. By providing the capability necessary for these basic training tasks, the CPT will free the mission flight simulator for the more demanding training associated with a complete mission profile.

The CPT is significantly less expensive than the mission flight simulator and is predicted to cost only $24 per hour to operate versus $73 per hour for the MFS. The CPT's will be co-located with the mission flight simulators. Delivery of the first CPT is scheduled for the fall of 1978 with delivery of the remaining two at three-month intervals thereafter.

C-141 COCKPIT PROCEDURES TRAINERS

The air force is on contract to purchase seven C-141 cockpit procedures trainers (or CPT) from Burtek, Inc., Tulsa, Oklahoma, to support Mac's training requirements. The CPT is essentialy a simplified version of the existing C-141 mission flight simulator (or MFS) now in use at these bases.

It will, however, provide a complete replica of the C-141 cockpit crew stations (as well as instructor stations). All controls, switches and displays necessary for ground and in-flight normal operating procedures, aircraft systems operation, and all emergency procedures, both ground and air, will be provided. In addition to monitoring student actions, the instructors will be able to simulate for the student various in-flight situations, including different flight conditions and all relevant symptoms of a wide range of aircraft system failures and malfunctions.

By providing the capability required for these basic training tasks, the CPT will free the present mission flight simulator for the more demanding training associated with the complete mission profile.

The CPT's will be co-located with the mission flight simulators. The C-141 OPT's will be located as follows: Two at Altus and one each at McGuire, Charleston, Norton, McChord, and Travis AFB's. Delivery of the first CPT is scheduled for the summer of 1979 with delivery of the remaining six at two-month intervals thereafter.

E-3A SIMULATOR

The E-3A is really a complex composed of a flight simulator and a mission simulator. The flight simulator has pilot, co-pilot, and flight engineer stations on a six-degree-of-freedom platform motion base. The flight simulator incorporates a terrain model board visual system for take-off, landing and in-flight refueling training tasks.

The E-3A mission simulator, as depicted in the illustration on the chart, is the main cabin replica of the aircraft. This simulator is on a fixed base and provides simulated data to the operators of the multipurpose consoles.

E-3 SIMULATOR PROGRAM STATUS

The E-3A flight deck portion of the simulator complex is currently scheduled for training 12 hours/day with 8 hours/day scheduled for maintenance. This simulator has enjoyed a 95 percent availability rate since going operational in November 1976.

The E-3A mission simulator is operating 20 hours/day, 6 days/week with 4 hours/day for maintenance. Since becoming operational in October 1976, the mission half of the complex has maintained a 99 percent availability rate.

F-15 OFT

[graphic]

The prime contractor for the F-15 OFT is McDonnell-Douglas, who, in turn, competed the program with Goodyear Aerospace winning the source selection as principal subcontractor for the simulator component to the F-15 weapon system.

The OFT is a single cockpit replica of the aircraft mounted on a 6 degree platform motion system. The OFT currently does not have any visual capability. It does provide systems training in air-to-air radar intercepts and weapons delivery and also is tactical electronic warfare capable.

F-15 OFT PROGRAM STATUS

The procurement program was supported by prior year funding. Five simulators have been delivered with all but the latest delivery in full operation. The latest simulator is currently undergoing its operational acceptance check.
