PREFACE.

A LIMITED impression of this manual of "Modern Geography" was printed some time ago, for the use of this School, with a view to obviate, or, at least, mitigate the difficulty that had always been strongly felt in procuring, from very young pupils, any satisfactory amount of home preparation upon the subject of it :and the impression being used up, and having been found decidedly promotive of its object,-not only by its author, but also by several other Teachers into whose hands it had casually fallen,-are the circumstances that now prompt its publication.

The method of "question and answer" has been adopted with no special view either to the guidance or convenience of the Teacher, and still less for the purpose of fostering an unreflecting habit on the part of the learner; but, simply, by the precision and intelligibility of its requirements, to compensate Junior Pupils, in some small degree, for the lack of that prolonged and sustained attention which, amidst the distractions of a mixed school, it is absolutely impossible for any Teacher to bestow upon them.
