MEMOIR.

THE late Reverend JAMES ROSS, D.D. was born in Aberdeen on the twenty-ninth of May, 1761. His father was a teacher of writing and arithmetic, and of the different branches of knowledge connected with these, and more particularly preparatory to the business of mercantile life. As a teacher he was distinguished by an affectionate regard to the interest of his pupils, whose improvement he was anxious by every means to promote. And many poor boys, whose parents were unable to defray the expense of their education, received the benefit of his instruction gratis, and acquired at his school the principles of that knowledge and those useful habits which enabled them afterwards to fill respectable situations in society.
