Child Psychiatry-Downstate Medical Center TITLE OF PROJECT The Effects of Childhood Plumbism on CNS Integrity USE THIS SPACE TO ABSTRACT YOUR PROPOSED RESEARCH. OUTLINE OBJECTIVES AND METHODS. UNDERSCORE THE KEY WORDS (NOT TO EXCEED 10) IN YOUR ABSTRACT. Two prospective cohort studies, with 100 subjects in each, are proposed in order In order to investigate the first question, it is proposed that two groups of children, who are found to be developmentally and neurologically normal by the Gesell Developmental Inventory, be followed and evaluated at periodic intervals with a number of neuropsychiatric exams for a seven year period of time. The two groups will differ in respect to blood-lead levels. The Experimental group will have a blood-lead level 80 micrograms percent or higher while the Control group will have a blood-lead level 30 micrograms percent or lower. It is hypothesized that the Experimental group will not perform as well as the Control group on tests of CNS integrity. In order to investigate the second question, the effect of chelation therapy on CNS integrity, it is proposed that two groups of asymptomatic lead-burdened children (defined as blood-lead level between 60 micrograms percent and 80 micrograms percent) be followed. One group will be treated with chelating drugs, as is done in numerous lead-control programs throughout the country, while the other cohort will not be treated with chelating agents as is the current policy at KCH with asymptomatic lead-burdened children. The two groups will be followed over a period of time and signs of developmental or neurological aberrations will be noted.
