PREFACE.

WHEN scenes of sorrow, difficulty, or trial are met with in the course of professional life, it is not always that a favourable opportunity or sufficient interval of time is afforded, to impart the consolation, advice, or encouragement evidently needed. In these cases a book may sometimes be unobtrusively introduced. The following collection of Extracts, with a few original remarks, has been arranged to provide a book which, it is hoped, will be found appropriate. When first starting into life, also, it is most important that noble aims be presented to the mind, and at this season the youthful heart usually lends a willing ear to poetry.

An essential of poetry is that choice and rhythmical position of words which, undulating in harmony with the emotions of the poet's mind, moves and moulds other minds into fitness, and an eager readiness to receive the pictured imagery of his thoughts. Thus, to her own characteristic

gift,

"The glance from heaven to earth, from earth to heaven,”

Poetry adds the picturesque of painting and music's heart-felt, heart-moving melodies.

In an animated conversation the tone of the voice, modulating words into harmony with the feelings, imparts this charm of poetry; and thus, when around the fireside or table a subject of conversation becomes general, as each speaker delivers his sentiments, connected, if not always agreeing, with the foregoing remarks, attention is more and more awakened, and the subject often makes a deep impression.

To produce this effect of an animated conversation upon the mind, is the end proposed in arrang

ing the sentiments of esteemed authors upon the importance and privilege of being immortal, the Christian's course through life, and conjugal love.

To receive, through the publishers, from any friend or reader, suggestions, corrections, or more appropriate extracts, would be very gratifying. Material assistance is acknowledged from "Half Hours with the best Authors," by C. Knight; "The Poets and Poetry of England," and "The Poets and Poetry of America," by R. W. Griswold; and "Poetry of Europe," by H. W. Longfellow.
