fully convinced, that the nation was punished by God for the tranfgreffion of his law; and not for crucifying the son of God, as Chriftians affert; and by which, his holy name hath been profaned; as above fhewn, page 278.

The Prophet then proceeds to fhew that, after God fhall thus have taken vengeance on the enemies of the nation; and thereby vindicated his holy name; he will restore them to their own land; ver. 25-29. "Therefore thus faith the LORD God: Now will I bring again the captivity of Jacob, and have mercy upon the whole houfe of Ifrael, and be jealous for mine holy name: And they fhall forget their reproach, and all their trefpaffes whereby they trefpaffed against me: when they shall dwell securely in their land, and none shall make (them) afraid: When I bring them back from the people *, and gather them from the lands of their enemies, and am fanctified through them in the fight of many nations. And they fhall know that I (am) the LORD their God, in that I caused them to be carried captive among the nati

ons,

ons, and (afterwards) collected them into their own land, and none of them will I leave there any more: Neither will I hide my face any more from them, when I have poured out my spirit upon the houfe of Ifrael, faith the LORD God."

From the explanation here given of this prophecy, the following fundamental principles are deducible. First, the vengeance which God will take on all those nations, that have perfecuted Ifrael: of which number is Gog, &c. And which agrees with the firft principle contained in the prophecies of Ifaiah.

Second, the falvation, and entire redemption of the nation: as is faid, (ver. 25.) "Now I will bring again the captivity of Jacob, and have mercy upon the whole houfe of Ifrael,—And none of them will I leave there any more." And which agrees with the third principle of Ifaiah.

Third, that Ifrael fhall not return to captivity any more and which agrees with the cleventh principle of Ifaiah.

Fourth, the nations will all then acknowledge the true Unity of God, and ferve him in truth as is faid, (ver. 21.) And I will

and

fet my glory among the nations; ------all the nations fhall know, &c. And which agrees with the twelfth principle of Isaiah.

Fifth, the return of the divine presence, and the spirit of prophecy: (as is faid, ver. 29.) "When I have poured out my fpirit upon the house of Ifrael :" and which agrees with the eighth principle of Isaiah.

But were these great and important promifes fulfilled at their return from Babylon? Certainly not. For then, no fuch vengeance was inflicted on their enemies: the whole houfe of Ifrael was not collected, and brought to their own land; fo that not one of them remained behind: the nations did not come to the knowledge of the true Unity of God: neither was the divine presence, or spirit of prophecy restored to the fecond temple. And, it is well known, that they were again carried captive, into this long and dreadful captivity. From all which, it is manifeft, that these promises were not then fulfilled. And, it is equally clear from the aforesaid arguments, that they never were fulfilled by, or in the person of Jesus: And it would only be wafting of time to no purpose, to shew VOL. II.

that,

that, they can not in any manner be applied to the spiritualizing scheme of the Chriftians: they consequently, remain to be fulfilled at the restoration of the nation, by the hands of the true Meffiah; whom God in his great Mercy, may be pleased to fend speedily, to redeem his chosen people. Amen.
