Printed for the use of the Committee on Labor and Public Welfare 44420 UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT PRINTING OFFICE WASHINGTON: 1959 PURCHASED THROUGH FOREWORD Under Senate Resolution 65 (86th Cong.) the Committee on Labor and Public Welfare was authorized to create a Subcommittee on Problems of the Aging and Aged. The subcommittee was authorized to conduct a comprehensive study of the problems of the aging, including the needs of the aging, programs of the various Federal agencies in meeting these needs, and the extent to which additional Federal programs should be undertaken to help solve their problems. In preparing for this study, some of the best informed people in the Nation in this field were asked to meet with the members of the subcommittee to explore the whole range of problems and to suggest guides and standards for further investigation. Testimony centered around four major subject areas-employment of the older worker; housing and living arrangements; health; and income maintenance and financing of medical care. Solutions offered to these problems call for cooperative action by voluntary agencies, local, State and Federal Governments. A number of facts and trends-some with dramatic impact on the future economic and social life of the country-emerged from the wealth of testimony presented by these experts. A digest of significant testimony, which we believe will be of great interest to all the Members of the Senate, and to the public as a whole, is included in this committee publication.
