NATIONAL ARCHIVES COLLECTION OF
RECORDS OF INAUGURAL COMMITTEES
(RECORD GROUP 274)

Inaugural committees, chairmen of which have been appointed by the President-elect since 1948, are organized into several staff offices and special committees to stage traditional public ceremonies in Washington, D.C., to honor the newly elected President and Vice President. The committees also provide accommodations for guests; compile guest lists; arrange for newspaper, radio, and television coverage of inaugural activities; and sell souvenirs. The Federal and the District of Columbia Governments provide aid and facilities to the committees. Preinaugural committees, first appointed in 1956, and inaugural planning committees, first appointed in 1960, procure office space and make other preliminary arrangements for the inaugural committees.

The location of early inaugural committee records is largely unknown, but records relating to early inaugurations are in the Library of Congress, the District of Columbia Public Library, Georgetown University, the Smithsonian Institution, and the Art and Reference Library of the Office of the Architect of the Capitol. Related records in the National Archives are among records of the U.S. Coast Guard (see RG 26), records of the Office of Public Buildings and Grounds (see RG 42), National Archives gift collection (see RG 200), and records of the Adjutant General's Office, 1917- (see RG 407).
