cause of their death. You must not indulge envy, for that will lead you either to hate or hurt those who are the objects of your envy. You must not envy the riches of another, the fine clothes they wear, the large house they live in, or the fine coach they ride in. If God thought proper, he would give you a fine coach to ride in, a large house to live in, fine clothes to wear, and many rupees to spend. You must not indulge a malicious and revengeful temper of mind. I should be much afraid if I heard a boy say, Well, never mind, I'll be revenged on him another time. I will pay him for this another day. I will serve him a trick that he will not like. This is a revengeful spirit, and may one day cost him his life, or perhaps the lives of both; for if he was the cause of your death, he might be condemned to die by the laws of his coun try: and thus end his life on the scaffold or the gibbet. Let all good children be careful what company they keep; go not with those boys who are always fighting and calling ill names. He that will have the last word and the last blow, you may be sure is the worst of the two. Wicked actions lead to

lying words. After Cain had killed his brother, he said he knew not where he was; so those who do that which is wrong and then try to hide it, by denying it or telling that which is not true, are doubly guilty. See my dear children how the first murder happened: one brother rose up against another and slew him. Children should never say to their brothers and sisters, I wish you were dead." This is a bad wish. It has murder in it. It shows that if you dare kill him, you would do it. You should not even treat your brothers and sisters with unkindness. This shews a cruel disposition, and you will bitterly repent of it when they are seperated from you. If they die before you, your own conscience will torment you, if you treat them with any degree of unkindness. Live as children of the same Almighty and heavenly Father, as well as children of the same earthly parent. See what a dreadful punishment God inflicted on Cain. What a terrible doom! He lived a terror to himself, he suffered a kind of hell upon earth! What a fearful thing it is to fall into the hands of the living God!. Let all brothers and sisters live together in harmony and peace.

A HYMN.

A HYMN.

The Death of Abel.

BY one man, sin his entrance made,
Death follow'd in his train;
And the first victim of his pow'r
Was by his brother slain.

By Cain's own hand, did Abel die,
When they were in the field;
By Satan tempted to this deed,
He to his pow'r did yield.

For Abel doth the Lord inquire,

His eyes can never sleep;

"I know not," lying Cain reply'd,

Do I my brother keep?

What hast thou done? Thy brother's blood

Aloud for vengeance cries;

I know thy sin, I saw the deed,

And all thy words are lies.

Curs'd from the earth, where Abel's blood

A hiding place hath found;

A vagabond, a fugitive,

A wand'rer on the ground.

Thus said the Lord. And Cain's reply
Is full of black despair,

My punishment is great indeed,

'Tis more than I can bear.

NOAH'S ARK.

GEN. 6. 14.-Make thee an ark of gopher wood; rooms shalt thou make in the ark, and shalt pitch it within and without with pitch.

NOAH

was not only the first ship-builder, but the first Naval Commander. In the introductory Lecture I mentioned that the sai lors call him Commodore Noah. They will not give him the title of Admiral, because he had not the command of a fleet of ships. It would be a happy thing if all Naval Commanders were like Noah. About an hundred years ago, Peter Jansen, a Dutch merchant, caused a ship to be built for him, answering in its proportions to those of Noah's ark, the length of it being 120 feet, the breadth of it 20, and the depth of it 12 feet. While it was building, Jansen and his ship were the laughing stock of all the seamen

who saw it. But afterwards it was found, that ships built in this fashion were, in the time of peace, beyond all others the most commodious for commerce, because they would hold a third part more cargo, without requiring any more hands to work it. They were found far better runners than any made before it. Therefore some gave to these kind of vessels, the name of Noah's ships.

I. I shall speak of the BUILDER of this ARK. It was Noah, therefore it is called Noah's ark. His name signifies rest and comfort. His father's name was Lamech, and his grandfather was the oldest man that ever lived in the world. Methusaleh lived 969 years, and he died. His great grandfather Enoch was a very holy man; he was so much beloved by God, that he was taken to heaven without dying.

Noah was a good man. What an excellent character is given of him in the word of God. It is said that "Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord." He found favor with God, who was pleased with him, because be was good; but God was displeased
