16. Were there any other living creatures! saved in the Ark? Yes, "two of every sort shall come unto thee, to keep them alive."

17. How were they to be fed while in the Ark? God commanded Noah to gather food for them, saying, "take thou unto thee of all food, that is eaten, and thou shalt gather it unto thee, and it shall be for food for thee - and for them."

18. Of whom was the Ark an emblem or type? Of the Lord Jesus Christ. Noah was saved in the Ark from the destruction that came upon the wicked. Sinners are saved in Christ from the wrath to come.

See Noah, humble, happy Saint,
Surrounded with the chosen few,
Sat in his Ark secure from fear,

And

that steer'd him through.

So may I sing in Jesus safe,

While storms of vengeance round me fall,

Conscious how high my hopes are fix'd

Beyond what shakes this earthly ball. Doddridge.

IV. PRACTICAL

ADDRESS.

My dear children, when will you be as good as Noah was? Do you think that God would save you if he were going to drown the world again? The world will not be destroyed a second

second time, by water, but by fire. "The heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat; the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burnt up." How happy will those chil dren be who love God, who love Jesus. Who love the Scriptures, who love prayer. Whose hearts are made holy by the spirit of God. They shall be safe. They need not fear. The Lord Jesus will be to them an Ark of safety. Then shall you be able to say and feel every word as you pronounce it:

Then let the wildest storms arise,.
Let tempests mingle earth and skies;
No fatal shipwreck shall I fear,
But all my treasures with me bear.

Doddridge.

Take care you who are wicked children, and remember that the fire which burns the world, will destroy even an Ark, like that which Noah built. No Ark of gopher wood will save you then. Consider Noah's character. and try to be like him. Be just and true in your dealings with mankind in the world. Let the natives around see in you a bright example of justice, sincerity and truth. These

are things on which the Hindoos set no value. They esteem them not. Therefore you ought to value them the more and persevere in the daily practice of them. That like Noah, you may by your example at least be preachers of righteousness. Noah walked with God, so should you. Remember that God is with you. Wherever you are, he is present. Let your actions be such as he will approve: and then you may be assured that he will never leave you or forsake you. When you see any

thing that bears any resemblance to Noah's Ark, remember that the cause of that Ark be. ing built was sin. The wickedness of man was so great that he destroyed them all, except Noah and his family. The living creatures that were saved in the Ark, shew you that God was merciful to the birds and beasts and creeping things: see that you are merciful to them likewise. Never use them with cruelty. Thank God that he has provided an Ark of safety for poor sinful Children in Jesus Christ. Amen.

A KYMN.

A HYMN.

Noah's Ark.

AMIDST the sons of Adam's race,
But one just man was found,
Noah, that highly favor'd saint,

Was sav'd when all were drown'd.

When wicked men grew bold in sin,
And God these sinners saw,
He said, my spirit shall not strive,
For I their crimes abhor.

Make thee an Ark of gopher wood,
Behold a flood shall come;

But thou and thine shall be preserv'd,
The Ark shall be thy home.

Of beasts and birds, and creeping things,
Yea, two of ev'ry kind,

By God's command, were kept alive,
And in the Ark confin'd.

Another Ark far more secure,

Shall all those children find,

Who to the arms of Jesus come,

And leave their sins behind.

Safe in this Ark, your

souls shall rest,

When the last storm shall come,

You shall ascend to see his face,

And Heav'n shall be your home.

LECTURE

LECTURE X,

THE DELUGE.

GEN. 7. 6.—And Noah was six hundred years old when the flood of waters was upon the earth.

WE read of many remarkable judgments in the history of the world. The judgments of God are various, earthquakes, whirlwinds, floods of water, commonly called inunda tions, war, famine, pestilence, fire and sword. These have at times desolated the world, destroyed cities, swept away villages and slain their inhabitants. The deluge far exceeds all other judgments in greatness and extent. Hear the words of the Lord; "Behold I, even I, do bring a flood of water upon the earth to destroy all flesh wherein is the breath of life from under heaven; and every thing that is in the earth shall die." It is said there is among the Hindoos an ancient poem, which contains the following tradition of the deluge. "At a certain period the whole race of men became
