The candle and the lamp gives us light by the help of the air by which they are sur rounded. We could not hear each other speak, if it were not for this valuable blessing of air. The ship sails by means of the wind, and the rice is ripened by the air. The firmament was made to "divide the waters from the waters." Thus they were divided into two parts. God gathered together a large quantity of water, which floated on the earth immediately under the air, and he mingled a suitable quantity with the air, that the atmosphere might be continually changed and kept in motion by the change of the quantity of water that is mingled with it. How wonderful are all the works of God!→ "He hath made the earth by his power. He hath established the World by his wisdom, and hath stretched out the heaven by his understanding. When he

uttereth his voice,

there is a multitude of waters in the heavens, and he causeth the vapours to ascend from the ends of the earth. He maketh lightnings with rain, and bringeth forth the wind out of his treasures. He stretched out the north over the empty place, and hangeth the earth

upon nothing." "And God called the firmament Heaven." God hath prepared his throne in the heavens. This word is often found in Scripture in the plural number. Paul says that he knew a man in Christ that was caught up into the third heavens. It is generally supposed that he means himself. So that we find by what he says, that there is a third heaven. This is said to be the heaven of heavens, the place where God dwells, where the holy angels are, where the spirits of good men made perfect dwell. The second heaven is called the starry heavens, and they are said to declare the glory of God, and the firmament to shew forth his handy work. This reaches from the Moon to the fixed Stars. The firmament is called Heaven. That is the aerial heaven, or the atmosphere is here meant. This is the place which contains the dew, rains, hail, snow, wind,
