be her friend and companion, she was to attend on Rebekah in the time of affliction. I will tell you more about Rebekah's nurse another time. When Rebekah departed they gave her a blessing. "And they blessed Rebekah and said unto her, thou art our sister, be thou the mother of thousands of millions, and let thy seed possess the gate of those which hate them." By this blessing we find that Abraham's Servant had told them of the promises that God had made to Abraham, when he said, "That in blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of heaven, and as the sand which is upon the sea shore; and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies." Rebekah's relations speak as if they believed that they would be true, and their hearts seem full of joy and hope, amidst the sorrow of parting with their Sister. They say to her, Be thou the mother of that seed. Similar addresses are made by the Hindoos when their daughters go to live with their husbands. "Be thou the wife of a king." "Be thou the mother of a son." They also gave Rebekah other attendants besides her nurse. "And Rebekah arose and her damsels, and they rode

rode upon the camels and followed the man; and the servant took Rebekah and went his way."

VI. PRACTICAL ADDRESS.

Let me entreat you, my dear young friends, to consider Rebekah's character, and imitate her conduct. Here is a noble example for you to follow, my dear girls. Look at her industry, she came with her pitcher on her shoulder. She went down to the well and filled her pitcher and came up. She did not stand to gaze at this stranger or his camels. She did not enquire who he was. We see no idle curiosity

in her conduct.

She went to draw water from

the well. There are many damsels who will not help themselves to a glass of water to drink, much less go to the well for water.

Mark her kindness to this stranger. When he asked for a little water to drink, she did not tell him to go and get it for himself, or that he might send one of his men for water if he pleased. She not only gave him drink, but offered to draw water for his camels also, till they had done drinking. Her gentleness cheerfulness, assiduity and kindness to Abra ham's servant was truly amiable. Drink, my lord.

With what respect she addressed him. Drink Sir, if you please, and I can soon go and fetch more; she drew water for ten camels also. Only think of this. Camels drink a great deal of water. When they are going to cross the desert, they are said to drink sufficient water to last them for some days.

Mark her sincerity, when her friends asked her whether she would go with the man. She said, I will go. No excuse

that

that the time was short, the journey long, or that she had not made up her mind on the subject. She saw the hand of the Lord, and was assured that he would bless her, therefore without affectation she any

will go.

says,

Again, my dear young friends, mark her humility and modesty. When she unexpectedly met Isaac in the field, she got down from the Camel. When she saw Isaac walking, she would not ride any longer. She took a vail and covered herself. When Isaac saw this he went first and spoke to the servant, and afterwards he went to Rebekah. See then that you are modest, kind, humble, and industrious, like Rebekah, whose daughters ye are, so long as ye do well. Seek to have it said of that " you, many daugh. ters have done virtuously; but thou excellest them all." Favour is deceitful and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised. Amen.

A HYMN.
