Helen Pitts Douglass recognized the stature and national prominence of her husband and spared no effort to make his home a memorial to him after his death. She organized the Frederick Douglass Memorial and Historical Association, which was chartered by Congress in 1900. Sixtytwo years later her dreams were realized when an Act of Congress made the Frederick Douglass Home a unit of the National Park System, thereby ensuring its preservation.
