THE design of the little work now presented to the public is to portray the character of Mrs. HUNtingTON in her childhood and youth, with more minuteness, than was found convenient in the larger volume. The interesting memoir, of this excellent woman, has been extensively circulated in our country; and has also been published in England, with a preliminary essay by Montgomery. It is a book which will continue to be read with a lively interest wherever piety is valued; and to her own sex is especially recommended as a work from which they may derive much practical instruction. The present work is intended more particularly for the benefit of youth; and with reference to this design, a few of the letters from the original memoir have been selected, as well suited to interest and improve this class of readers. The first knowledge which we wish to impart to our children is the knowledge of that great and good Being who created all things. Before they can read, we can make them acquainted with his character, through the medium of his works. Man, the noblest of his works naturally becomes an object of contemplation; and in this way a taste for biography may be so early implanted, that but few will remember its beginning.
