clinging to our Saviour, and persevering prayer, may we successfully fight the good fight of faith, and lay hold on eternal life.

Bless our family, and all our family plans. May they all be such as becomes a Christian household. May the friends of the Lord Jesus be our friends. May we use hospitality without grudging, and especially towards thy children, rejoicing to show love to all those who love thee.

Pardon the many sins of our country. Deliver us from popery, lawlessness, and infidelity. Continue to us [our Christian constitution, and] the religious privileges which we have so long enjoyed. Remember thy mercy and truth toward the house of Israel, and let all the ends of the earth see and rejoice in thy salvation, for our Redeemer's sake.

LXI.

TUESDAY MORNING.

FOR HEAVENLY-MINDEDNESS, STRENGTH, AND GRACE FOR RELATIVE DUTIES.

O everlasting Lord, the God of heaven, and the God of earth, the Lord God Omnipotent, who reignest over all, a God ready to pardon, gracious and merciful, and of great kindness, we a company of thy sinful creatures, gathered together in the name of Jesus Christ, worship thee and kneel before thee our Maker; for thou art our God, and we are the people of thy pasture.

Great has been thy goodness to us in calling us to the knowledge of thyself, baptizing us in thy name, and quickening us when dead in sins. O raise us up together with all thy faithful saints, and make us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus. May we discern the excellence of the heavenly treasure. May we choose it as our portion. May our hearts be there where Christ our Lord is.

May our whole

polity and converse be there: looking for that Saviour who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body, according to his own mighty work. May we honour all men, love the brotherhood, fear God, and honour our rulers. Preserve us from the unbelief of the world. Let thy word be ever to us a sufficient warrant for our hopes. Let us never take the opinions of men only as our standard, but rest upon the word of him who cannot lie, who will not mock, and who loves us with a true and constant love.

But, O gracious God, how weak is our faith, how dull is our hope, how cold is our love, how languid our zeal. Truly thou mightest justly cast us far off and leave us to our own devices; but, O forsake us not, though our sins are multiplied and our strength faileth. Perfect that which concerns us, for thy mercy endureth for ever, forsake not the work of thine own hands. Revive thy work in our souls, lead us into all truth, and make thy truth sanctifying to us; and knowing its preciousness ourselves may we delight to impart it to others.

Preserve us, Lord, from wresting thy holy word to purposes of pride and self-righteousness, or from turning the grace of our God into licentiousness; but may we tremble at thy word, and receive it with holy awe.

O grant that we may never forget that we must all stand before the judgment seat of Christ. May it be our great and chief concern now so to act as to be accepted of him in that day. Knowing this, may we now believe with the heart unto righteousness; may we now with the mouth make confession unto salvation, and may our love abound more and more, in knowledge and in all judgment. O may we dwell in love, and so dwell in thee our God. Do thou thyself dwell in us, that thus love may with us be made perfect, and that we may have boldness in the day of judgment, because as thou art, so are we in this world.

Give the younger grace to submit to the elder, and the elder to be examples to all. May all of us be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility. By the power of thine own Spirit, may we fulfil all relative duties with constant, persevering, and conscientious diligence, whether as parents or children, masters or servants, teachers or learners, friends or dependents, over others or subject to them, rich or poor, young or old. O may the doctrine of God our Saviour be adorned by a consistent, steady, daily, and self-denying fulfilment of our duties to each

other, ever willing to give up our own inclination, will, and pleasure, for the good of others. Let us be lovers of hospitality and of all good men; never living to ourselves, but rejoicing to be both a help and a comfort to all around us.

So inspire thy church with holy love, so order thy providence, so pour out thy Holy Spirit, that the glorious gospel of Jesus Christ may win its mighty way and fill the earth with the knowledge of thy glory. Have mercy on Jacob, and yet choose Israel, and set them in their own land, and make Jerusalem the joy of the whole earth, for the sake of Jesus. Christ, the seed of Abraham after the flesh, and the Son of the Most High God. Amen.

LXII.

TUESDAY EVENING.

FOR A CONTRITE SPIRIT, AND THE FULNESS OF CHRIST'S SALVATION.

O Lord, grant that none of us may glory in any wisdom, might, or riches of this world; but may we glory rather in this, that we understand and know thee as the ever-living Jehovah, who exercisest lovingkindness, judgment and righteousness in the earth, and delightest in them. May we acquaint ourselves more and more with thee, and be at peace; and especially, by the knowledge of Christ our Saviour, may we rise to the daily, heart-felt, growing, and delightful knowledge of thee our Father.

Now pour into each heart the spirit of grace and supplication, that feeling our absolute need of thy mercy and thirsting after thy loving-kindness, we may, with longing desires for thy presence and blessing, now wait upon thee. We have all alike, in many things displeased our God by coming short of his glory. All our services of God are full of defects. All our lives are defiled with sins. However before man we may be blameless and harmless, free from the condemnation of human laws and human judgment, before our God we can only plead sin and guilt. We are not only unprofitable servants, but we have been evil and perverse servants, dishonouring thy name by pride and vanity, by selfishness and worldliness, by levity and indolence, by unbelief and presumption. O give us to see more the real extent of our own exceeding sinfulness, that we may be truly humble and contrite before thee, and never be puffed up with the vain conceit of any good thing in us, but always lie low before thee, and loathe and abhor ourselves.

Enable us also, by the teaching of the same Holy Spirit, more to know the grace of Jesus Christ, our blessed Saviour; to realize more of his unsearchable riches, his inexhaustible fulness, his suitableness and all-sufficiency; so that we may every one of us see that all that believe are complete in him, and that he is the end of the law for righteousness to our souls, and made of God unto us all that we need for present peace, and holiness, and everlasting blessedness.
