unto those that love thy name, and give us constantly the gracious unction of thine own Holy Spirit.

And, O merciful Father, enable us by faith to apprehend Christ, of whom we are apprehended. May we distinctly discern and truly believe that thou hast laid on him the iniquity of us all; that he was wounded for our trangressions and bruised for our iniquities, and the chastisement of our peace was upon him. May we build on Christ Jesus alone, that only foundation of all our hopes, and may it be our stay and comfort against all the terrors of the law, and the accusations of Satan, and the charges of conscience in life and in death, O may we, now kneeling in thy presence, at the present time and in the day of judgment, be numbered with those to whom there is no condemnation, who are in Christ Jesus, and who walk not after the flesh but after the Spirit.

O Lord, make us watchful against our many snares and temptations, and may we ever take heed lest we fall. May we be encouraged by thy assurance that no temptation shall come upon us but such as is common to man, and that thy faithfulness is engaged that we shall not be tempted above what we are able to bear, but that thou wilt make a way for us to escape.

O Lord, may we delight in that which pleases thee; teach us to do thy will, not only in patiently submitting to all thy afflictive dealings with us, but

also in actively fulfilling all the duties to which thou hast called us. Thy Spirit is good; lead us into the land of uprightness, and grant us to glow with ardent and supreme love to thee and unfeigned love to all

men.

When shall it be that the glory of the Lord shall be revealed and all flesh shall see it together! Wonderful, in our day, is thy work in bringing nations nearer to each other, and multiplying facilities and rapidity of intercourse. O Lord, may every discovery in arts and science and means of communication facilitate the progress of the gospel and prepare the way of the Lord. Graft in again thy people Israel, and by them fill the whole face of the world with fruit, through our Lord Jesus Christ.

SATURDAY MORNING.

Amen.

PREPARATION FOR THE SABBATH-INTERCESSION FOR THE CHURCH.

Brought by thy goodness, O our God, to the last day of another week, we worship together at thy mercy-seat in the name of that blessed Lord, thy own Son, who has loved us and given himself for us. Thou art the same unchangeable and eternal Being, from everlasting to everlasting, God over all, supreme and for ever blessed.

We thank thee for all thy innumerable mercies to

us, thy unprofitable and sinful creatures. We bless thee that thou hast refreshed and strengthened us with both inward and outward blessings. We thank thee that we were born in this peculiarly favoured land, that thy house is freely and publicly opened here to us and to all, and that thy holy word is so largely circulated and so fully set before us. O let not all these privileges be in vain; let us not slight nor despise our own mercies, but may they be effectual means of grace, so that we may truly profit by them.

Bless us and all who shall worship with us on thy holy day, in the prospect of another Sabbath, and in preparation for it. May every thing this day be ordered by us so that there may be an entire consecration of the Sabbath, uninterruptedly, to thy service. May we gain deeper views of thy holiness and of our high privilege as washed in the blood of Jesus and made kings and priests unto thee. May we know more of that love of our Saviour, which passes knowledge. May we be assured that we are received into that blessed body which is the company of all true believers, and may we be enabled to look with full assurance of hope to that heavenly glory which is preparing for us.

O Lord, graciously assist, teach, and strengthen thy ministers, and give them heavenly unction that they may preach the word, be instant in season and eut of season, reprove, rebuke, exhort with all long

suffering and doctrine, making full proof of their ministry. Bless each ordinance of thy house to our own salvation, the spiritual good of others, and the honour and glory of thy name.

Bless thy whole church, scattered over the world. Bless the various pastors of thy church, and all appointed to minister unto thy people. O Lord, look in great love on Protestant churches in foreign lands, and grant that whatever is defective in us or in them may be remedied by thy grace. Pour thy Spirit on all that preach thy gospel through the world; whether among Jews or Greeks, barbarians, Scythians, bond or free, in Europe, Asia, Africa, America, and the islands scattered through the wide ocean-be with them, stand by them, and strengthen them. May their labours have an abundant increase, and thousands and tens of thousands bless thee for ever for their labours.

O Lord, send forth more labourers into thy harvest. Look in pity upon the multitudes now wandering as sheep without a Shepherd, and thrust forth faithful men who shall follow Christ in seeking and saving that which is lost. Pour thy abundant blessing on those preparing for the ministry, and may multitudes go forth as from the schools of the prophets, to gather in thine elect from every land, through Jesus Christ the chief Shepherd and true Bishop of our souls. Amen.

SATURDAY EVENING.

FOR REST IN CHRIST, AND SPECIAL BLESSINGS ON THE SABBATH.

O thou who hast said, Come unto me all ye that labour and are heavy-laden and I will give you rest, who never hast cast out any that came unto thee; and who art the same yesterday, to-day and for ever, wearied with care and toil, temptation and conflict, and burdened with many sins-we come unto thee, for rest. Pardon us, save us, bless us, give to each thy peace and rest, and make us blessings to our fellow-creatures.

Lord, we believe that thou, according to thy promise, art in the midst of us and hearest us, and wilt graciously answer our prayers. Lord, increase our faith. Give us a deep sense of our own necessities, and of thine abundant fulness. Give us to feel our own frail and dying condition, and that we must soon appear before the judgment-seat of Christ, and that all believing in him shall share his heavenly kingdom. We have grievously fallen from our high standing as the sons of God, and are unworthy of the least of thy mercies, much more of the precious gift of eternal life. O Lord, strengthen our faith. Give us lively faith in all thy promises. May we live in the light of things future and eternal, May
