SINS OF THE GENTILE CHURCHES CONFESSED, AND PRAYER FOR CLEANSING.

O Lord Jesus Christ, once crucified for us, and now our exalted Prince and Saviour, who hast planted us as fig-trees in thy vineyard and lookest for fruit, and if thou findest none year after year, mayest justly sentence us to perpetual barrenness, pardon us and spare us who deserve thy righteous wrath. Thou didst not spare the people of Israel, who refused and rejected thee, and denied the Holy One and the Just, and killed thee the Prince of Life in their day of visitation; yet we beseech thee look in mercy upon us, and grant us in this our day of grace true repentance and remission of our sins.

apostacy and unbelief. We mourn before thee the sad condition not only of the Eastern churches and of the Roman churches, but also of thy Reformed churches through the earth. We mourn that thy churches have not taken warning by thy past judgments on Israel, nor by the woes already poured out on ancient Christian churches. pented, and given thee glory. mercy upon us a sinful nation, a and children that are corrupters. Give us grace to wash and be made clean in that fountain which thou hast opened for sin and uncleanness; to cease to do evil and learn to do well; to seek judgment, to relieve the oppressed, to judge the fatherless, and plead for the widow. May thy churches every where be watchful, and strengthen the things that remain and are ready to die, and may we remember how we have received and heard and hold fast and repent, lest thou come on us as a thief, and find us all ignorant of thy coming and unprepared for it.

Cleanse thy spiritual Temple, O Jesus, through the world. Cast out of it, and cast out of our hearts all worldliness, love of money, and every thing that would defile and pollute what thou hast claimed for thyself. Baptized in thy name, and consecrated to thy service, may we be kept pure for thee, and preserved from seeking to join together the service of God and the service of Mammon.

O may thy love, thou precious Saviour, constrain

us to surrender ourselves wholly to thee. Seeing thou didst die for us all, and we all died in thee, grant that we which live may no longer live to ourselves, but unto thee who died for us and rose again. Hear us, for thy name's sake.

FOR GRACE TO HAVE FELLOWSHIP WITH CHRIST'S

SUFFERINGS.

O Lord Jesus Christ, who before thy crucifixion knewest all things that should befall thee at Jerusalem, and yet with constant mind didst go before thy disciples, straitened till thy suffering baptism was all accomplished, make us willing to go through our lighter sufferings for thy sake; and may we, by thy grace, never shrink from the wrath and reproach of man for thee, but willingly endure it for thy sake.

Blessed Redeemer, make us more and more like thyself; O Lord God, so help us that we may never be confounded, but may set our face as a flint against all that is sinful, and never be ashamed of thy gospel as the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth, both Jew and Gentile.

What thanks, what eternal thanks we owe unto thee for thy patient, enduring, untiring and unequalled zeal! O thou once tempted, tried, suffering and dying Lord, now reigning in glory, all praise be

unto thee that nothing stopped thee in thy course of persevering and self-sacrificing love, till thou hadst made a complete and finished satisfaction for all our sins in thy death on the cross. All glory be to thy holy name. And let not all this costly love be received by us in vain. May we know the power of thy resurrection and the fellowship of thy sufferings. May we ever remember that we are called to do well, and to suffer for it, and take it patiently, and that this is acceptable with God; because thou, O Christ, hast also suffered for us, leaving us an example that we should follow in thy steps. May we then ever arm ourselves with the same mind, and live no longer the rest of our time in the flesh to the lusts of men, but always live to the will of God, glorifying him in our body and our spirit, which

Give us all grace to look forward to that day when the glory of Christ shall be revealed. May we in the prospect of that glory, whenever we are partakers of thy sufferings, be glad with exceeding joy, and commit the keeping of our souls unto thee our God, in well doing, as unto a faithful Creator; and thus may many, very many around us, be won by our good conversation.

O God of all grace, who. hast called us unto thy eternal glory by Christ Jesus, make us perfect, stablish, strengthen and settle us. To thee be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.

WEDNESDAY MORNING.

FOR GRACE TO RECEIVE THE INSTRUCTIONS OF

CHRIST.

O Lord Jesus Christ, who, as thy days on earth came nearer to their close didst more and more abound in full instruction and labours of love, grant, we pray thee, that we also, feeling the shortness of our time in this world, may continually abound more in love towards each other and towards all men, and be sincere and without offence till the day of thy coming, being filled with the fruits of righteousness which are by thee to the praise and glory of God.

By thy wisdom in answering thy enemies, may we learn to be wise as serpents and harmless as doves. May we see that it is worse to promise and not to perform, than to fail in promising, but afterwards to repent and obey. O hereafter may we be found among the penitent and obedient, gladly accepting thy gracious invitations, and yielding cheerful obedience to all thy holy commands.

O Lord Jesus, who hast planted with such care a vineyard amongst us Gentiles, and hast so often found us refusing to render thee the fruit in its season, at length dispose us gladly to yield unto thee, the rightful Lord, the fruit that is so justly thine own, lest we perish in our wickedness. May we henceforth be fruitful in every good word and work.
