were heard in the Air, the Year 1685. of which I fhall give an account in his own words.

The Hiftorians of all Ages have been of opinion that the great Revolutions which have happened in the Societies of Men have been preceded by the extraordinary Events, fuch as Earthquakes, Signs in Heaven, and Prodigies on Earth, of which I could give an infinite number of matters of Fact, very well attefted, which have been Prefages of Events little lefs confiderable than thofe at prefent in the World: and though it feems to me that Earthquakes have their Natural Caufes, and fo have Famines Pestilences and Wars; neverihelefs Jefus Chrift puts thefe among thofe things which are to prefage his coming; Not that I believe all E-. clipfes and all Earthquakes are Prefages, but there are fuch circumftances of time and place and concomitant figns in fome, that no Man I think without rafhnefs can deny but the providence of God doth difpence them to ftrike the minds of Men with aftonishment, and make them attentive to his Judgments; and among other times this Year 1685. has been as abundant in Prodigies as any for a long while; wherein we have heard of nothing but extraordinary Storms, Fires falling from Heaven, others coming out of the Earth, of Signs in the Air, and Infects of unknown fheaps which have been believed to have fallen from

Hea

Heaven; And particularly the Singing of Pfalms and Voices in the Air.

It is near a Year fince we first heard any Speech concerning it, and they told us that thefe Singings had been heard in Bearne, the first Province whether the Dragoons were fent. Behold our Witneffes, every one will judge of what worth they are; Monfieur Magendy Paftor of the Church of Orthez having been queftioned concerning this Affair has interrogated divers Perfons, according as it appears by his Certifi

cate.

I do declare that Monfieure Bazin a younger Brother, and an Inhabitant of Orthez in Bearne bath told me, that walking with Some of his Friends after midday near the City Orthez, he heard voices which Sung Pfalms; and as he imagined that it might be fome Women that wash'd Linnen, he ran to demand of them whither it was they that Sung; they told him no, and that they themselves bad for a long time beard the fame Singing of Pfalms. This happened fome Months before the Interdiction of our Church. The faid Monfieur Bazin is a very honest Man, very judicious, and of integrity; I add that Mademoiffelle de Cafenuae of Orthez faid to Perfons worthy of credit, That being not able to believe that which was faid concerning this Singing of Pfalms, a Woman faid to her, That if She bad tbe curiofity to bear them Sing,

Spe

She would call on her at her own Houfe at a time convenient, which he did; for this Woman being at eleven at night in the uttermoft part of the City, with multitudes of other Perfons, to hear thefe voices which Sung in the Air the Praifes of God; baving heard this Singing of Pfalms, he ran to Mademoiselle alenaue, who immediately, gets out of her Bed, causes one of her Neighbours to rife; and they ran to that quarter of the City which was far removed from her Houfe, where they found multitudes of Perfons who were ravished with that pleasant melody which they heard in the Air; they themselves returned to their Houfes with this great confolation to have beard thofe Pfalms Sung in the Air which they could no more Sing in their Church, which had been interdicted for fome months paft: They added, That they feemed to bear them Sing after the fame manner which they used to Sing in their Church, and after the Singing ceafed, there was a Voice which spake but after a manner inarticulate and confused, fo that they could not diftinguish what was faid. This Gentlewoman is very well worthy of credit. Moreover I atteft that an infinite number of Perfons of Orthez do fay, that they heard the Singing of Pfalms, which they call the Singing of Angels; and that they exhorted each other in the Day to be prefent in the night in certain places of the City to fatisfie

this Holy Curiofity, which was the rea fon that the Magiftrates of Orthez published an Ordinance, whereby they for bad all Perfons from going out of their Houses, or affembling themselves by night to bear thefe Voices; which filled this poor afflicted People with joy, and extraordinary confolation. This is that which has been told me concerning this Singing of Pfalms, to which I find no difficulty to give a full con fent, becaufe the Perfons that have reported it are of great fincerity. Given at Amfterdam November 23 1686. Signed Magendie, heretofore Minister of Örthez in Bearne.

Monfieur Garfin another Minister of the faid Church of Orthez, declares what follows. I chofe Name is hereunder written beretofore Paftor of the Reformed Church, of Orthez in Bearne, Do certifie to all thofe whom it may concern, that my Brother-inLaw De Roux a Lawyer told me that between the hours of Eleven and Twelve at night, being on the Backfide of his Houfe in the City of Orthez; he heard the Singing of Pfalms above him, and then a little after he heard the fame Singing come from a plate at a greater distance; After which he was fully convinced of the truth of this Singing of Pfalms so much difcourt of all the World over: Moreover be thought fometimes during the whole night when his Gout bindred bim from fleefing, that he

beard the fame Singing after a manner less diftinct and unintelligible. I am informed by Monfieur Clarier a Lawyer of the fame City of Orthez, that the Curate of the place and a certain Prieft called Ďufan, and Monfieur Lichigarai another Lawyer, as alfo a Brother of the Curate called Monficur De la Roque fent to fearch out a certain Popish Damofel to know of her if it were true that he had faid, that he had beard this Singing of Pfalms, and that fhe told them, Yea. And having demanded of her bow he knew it was the Singing of Pfalms, fhe replyed, That he had beard the fame Singing in the Church of thofe of the Reformed Religion; And being ask'd how she came to hear Singing there, anfwered, She had been once there at Baptifm: But that going to a certain Fountain he had often heard this Singing as fhe paffed by the Church at the hours of Preaching and Prayer. After this Monfieur Clarier told me, that the Curate and others strictly forbad her to say any more that he had heard the frid Singing of Pfalms. Given at Amfterdam Septemb. 23. 1689. Signed Garfin Minifter.

One Peter Mauperg of the faid City of Orthez Signed the following Certificate. I whofe Name is underwritten certifie to all whom it may concern that in the Year 1685. about the Months of Auguft or Sep
