ing alone in my Chamber, and about mid-
night I heard upon the Roof a voice very
fhrill which awoke me, and afterward f
or fix other voices that affifted it, and they
fung five or fix verfes of the fifth Pfalm.
O Lord unto my words give ear,
My Meditation weigh,

My King, my God, my crying hear
For unto thee I pray,

Thou wilt deftroy them than are proud
To utter Tales and Lies,
God will abhor the Bloody one
And fuch as fraud devife.
But to thy House I will draw near
In thine abundant Grace,
And Worship in thy holy fear
Toward thy holy place.

Lord lead me in thy Righteoufnefs
Becaufe of all my Foes,

And thy ftrait paths, leaft I tranfgrefs
Before my face difclofe.

For in their mouth no truth appears,
Their Heart with mifchief throngs,
Their Throats are open Sepulchers,
They flatter with their Tongues.
Deftroy them Lord, deftroy them all,
Let them be overthrown
And into juft deftruction fall

By Counçels of their own.
And let them be caft out and quell'd
For their exceffive fin,

For they have wickedly rebell'd
Against the Lord therein.

But

But let O Lord all thofe rejoyce
That put their Truft in thee,

Let them with fhouts lift up their voice
And ever joyful be.

Let them likewife that love thy name,
Which is their confidence,

Be ever joyful in the fame

Since thou art their defence.
For to the Righteous man no doubt
Thou wilt thy Bleffing yield,
And ever compafs him about

With favour as a fhield.

All thofe of the Houfe heard it many times. The faid Monfieur of the Dark Valley confirmed me in this belief by a fecond Letter Jan. 27. 1686. that this finging doth continue conftantly. The faid Monfieur adds, Now the beating of a Drum is heard, as if Soldiers were marching, and this is beard at mid-day in many places. Signed Barjune Minister of St. Marfelle in Cevennes, now fled to Lausanna in Switzerland.

The third Certificate. Toward the end of September laft being with Monfieur d Efpeées a Gentleman of merit, who is of Vigan in Cevennes, and we flying to the Castle of a Gentleman of our friends, named M. de Montualian, we heard in the Air a confiderable number of Drums. Five or fix days after being with the fame Gentleman at Ablatatz in Cevennes, whither my

Family was Fled for refuge; we heard in the Air a Holy Harmony, Singing the Holy Praifes of God. This I certifie to be true, forafmuch as I heard it. Signed Saligne d Marnis in Cevennes.

The fourth Certificate is the Extracts of two Letters written to Laufaunna to Mademoifelle Loufe des Vignoles, by her Coufin M. Fane des Vignoles. Dated Jan. 3. 1686. How happy are you my dear Coufin that you can pray and fing the Praifes of God in Publick, when in the mean time fo many good Souls have their Souls flopped, and dare not difcover what paffes in their mind; But as to the Bufinefs of Singing the Praifes of God, it is neceffary that I fpake to you of the Miracle which makes fo much noife in this Coun try, which is that fince the entire lofs of our Churches and our Paftors, there has been heard in the Air Voices and Sounds of Inftruments very melodious, and that which is most extraordinary is, that many Perfons diftinguish the Tunes of the Pfalms, and I can affure you of the truth thereof, fince I myself have diftinguished more than thirty; It has been told me that my Brother (M. de Mont Viallant) diftinguishes them all perfectly well. Can you imagine that we hear thefe Voices Night and Day, and that we can fo much as doubt that they are Troops of Angels which God fends to us for our confolation, to affure us that be bath not utterly forfaken us, and that

our

our deliverance is at hand; God God grant tha e may make profit by these things. I had forgotten to tell you that the noife of a Drum is bere beard fo clearly that no Body can doubt thereof, no more than about the Singing of Pfalms; for there are so many Perfons of good understanding convinced thereof, that we ought to give up ourselves to the power of Truth. I do avow that the thing paffes all imagination, but be asured that all care imaginable has been taken to prevent delufion.

To conclude, faith my Author, how ought we diftreffed Proteftants to give thanks to God that he approves our Worship by a fign fo confiderable? Let not our Enemies tell us that all this is nothing but delufion, for all Illufions come from the Father of Lies, and who hath the Praifes of God in horror and deteftation; In fhort, behold this Event as a happy Prefage that God will not fuffer our Voices nor out Songs to die: The Angels have taken them up, and will fhortly reftore them that we ourselves may found them forth in the Air: The time of our deliveramce is at hand, and the Spirit of Life will return, when the Spirit of Repentance and Piety is re-entred into our Sonls.

LX. In 1687. Octob. 20. The London Gazett gives a fad Relation of another Earthquake in the Kingdom of Peru in America, whereby the City of Lima was F 4 totally

totally overthrown, and not one House left ftanding, burying many of the Inhabitants under its ruins; At the fame time Callao, Fanette, Pifco, Chancay, Los Florillos, &c. most of them Seaport Towns, were deftroyed by an Inundation of the Sea, which carried feveral Ships above nine Miles into the Country; and great numbers of People and Cattel were drowned, there being found when the water fell, at one place near the Seafide above five thousand People dead, and every day more were found; fo that no account could be given of their number.

LXI. In 1688. A dreadful Earthquake happened at Naples in Italy, which was attended with the rage and roarings of Mount Vefuvius; of which the London Gazett gives likewife the following Account in a Letter from that City; Dated June 8. On Saturday June 5. about the twenty fecond hour happened here a terrible Earthquake, though it lafted not long, which frightning the Inhabitants out of their Houfes with the terror of an inevitable deftruction, they betook themselves to the Piazza's and open publick places of the City. The old College of the Jefuits was ruin'd by it, alfo the great Chappel of their New College, together with three other Chappels adjoining; Three of the Fathers were killed there befides many others whofe numbers are not yet known: The Front of another great Church of the Jefuits opened in many

cracks,
