Jofephus in his Hiftory of the Antiquities of the Jews gives the following account of this dreadful Judgment; That Mofes making a large Prayer, intermixt with Tears, while he was fpeaking, the Earth instantly trembled, and fhaking began to move like a Billow of the Sea raifed by the violence of Wind; at which all the People were forely amazed; after which an horrible and fhat

tering Noife was made about their Tents and inftantly the Earth opened and fwallowed up both them and all that belonged to. them, infomuch that nothing which was theirs remained to be feen; And the Earth in a moment clofing again, the vast gaping immediately was fhut, fo that there was not the leaft appearance of what had happened; Thus perished they all, leaving behind them an example of Gods Power and Judgment, and this accident was the more miferable in that there were none, even of their Kinsfolks and Allies that had compaffion of them, fo that the whole People forgetting what was paffed, allowed Gods Juftice with joyful Acclamations; efteeming them unworthy to be bewailed, but accounted as the Plague and Perverters of the People. After this, faith he, there fuddenly appeared fo bright a Fire that the like was never kindled by the hand of Man, nor ever broke forth from the Bowels of burning Mountains, nor could proceed from any natural cause, but fuch as feemed to be kindled from Heaven, exceeding light and flaming, by the fury and violence of which thofe two hundred and fifty, together with Korab, were fo confumed that there fcarce appeared any relicks of their Carcafes, Only Aaron remained untouched, to the end that it might appear this Fire came from Heaven. This was in the year of the World, 2515.

XI. A third tremendous Earthquake caused by the immediate Power of God without any apparant or natural Caufe, and whereby the Ifraelites gain'd a great Victory over the Philistines, is in 1 Samuel 14. And it came to país on a Day that Fondthan the Son of Saul faid unto the Young • Man that bare his Armour, come and let us go over to the Philistines Garrison that is on the other fide, but he told not his Father. And between the paffages by which Jonathan fought to go over to the Philiftines there was a fharp Rock on the one fide, and a fharp Rock on the other fide. And Jonathan faid to the Young • Man that bare his Armour, come and let us go over unto the Garrison of these uncircumcifed, it may be that the Lord will work for us, for there is no restraint to the Lord to fave by many or few; And his Armour-bearer faid unto him, Do all that is in thy Heart, turn thee, behold I am with thee according to thy Heart; Then faid Jonathan, behold we will pafs over • unto these Men, and we will discover our felves unto them, if they fay unto us, TarC ry until we come to you ; then we will tand still in our place, and will not go up unto them. But if they fay thus, Come up unto us, then we will go up, for the Lord hath delivered them into our hand and this fhall be a fign unto us. And both of them difcovered themfelves to the Gar

rifon of the Philistines, and the Philistines faid, behold the Hebrews come forth out of their holes, where they had hid themfelves. And the men of the Garrifon anfwered Jonathan and his Armour-bearer, and faid, Come up to us, and we will fhew you a thing. And Jonathan said unto his Armour-bearer, Come up after me, for the Lord hath delivered them into the * hand of Ifrael. And Jonathan climbed up on his Hands and upon his Feet, and his Armour-bearer after him, and they fell before Jonathan and his Armour-bearer flew after him. And that, first flaughter which Jonathan and his Armour-bearer made was about twenty Men within as it were an half Acre of Land, which a yoak * of Oxen might Plow. And there was trembling in the Hoft, in the Field, and among all the People: the Garrifon and the Spoilers they alfo trembled, and thé Earth quaked fo that it was a very greattrembling (a trembling of God). And the • Watchman of Saul in Gibeah of Benja'min looked; and behold the multitude← melted, away, and they went on, beating • down one another. Then faid Saul unto the People that were with him, Number 1 < now and fee who is gon from us.
