XIV. The Second Collect.

1. The preparations of the heart in man, and the answer of the tongue, is from the Lord. Pr. xvi. 1. Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights. Ja. i. 17. It is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure. Ph.

ii. 13.

2. O Lord, I know that the way of man is not in himself; it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps. Je. x. 23. Counsel is mine, and sound wisdom; I am understanding, I have strength. Pr. viii. 14. There are many devices in a man's heart; nevertheless the counsel of the Lord, that shall stand. Pr. xix. 21.

3. Thanks be to God, which put the same earnest care into the heart of Titus for you. 2 Co. viii. 16. Then rose up the chief of the fathers, with all them whose spirit God had raised, to go up to build the house of the Lord which is in Jerusalem. Ezr. i. 5. -See also, 1 Ch. xxix. 16.-Ezr. vii. 27.

4. Lord, thou wilt ordain peace for us; for thou unto thy ser- also hast wrought all our works in us. Is. xxvi. 12. Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you; not as the world giveth, give I unto you. John xiv. 27. Being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Ro. v. 1. Our rejoicing is this, the testimony of our conscience. 2 Co. i. 12.

1. Lighten our darkness,

they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city. Re. xxii. 14.

6. The Lord is our defence. Ps. lxxxix. 18. As he spake, that we should be saved from our enemies, and from the hand of all that hate us; that he would grant unto us, that we being delivered out of the hand of our enemies, might serve him without fear, in holiness and righteousness before him, all the days of our life. Lu. i. 70, 71. 74, 75. And all thy children shall be taught of the Lord, and great shall be the peace of thy children: thou shalt be far from oppression, for thou shalt not fear: and from terror, for it shall not come near thee. Is. liv. 13, 14.

7. The Lord of peace himself give you peace always by all means. 2 Th. iii. 16. The peace God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. Ph. iv. 7. And the work of righteousness shall be peace, and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever: and my people shall dwell in a peaceable habitation, and in sure dwellings, and in quiet resting places. Is. xxxii. 17, 18. I will make with them a covenant of peace, and will cause the evil beasts to cease out of the land: and they shall dwell safely in the wilderness, and sleep in the woods. Ez. xxxiv. 25. Now the Lord my God hath given me rest on every side. 1 Ki. v. 4. Being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Ro. v. 1.

XV. The Third Collect, for Aid against all Perils.

1. Thou art my lamp, O Lord; and the Lord Conwe beseech will lighten my darkness. 2 Sa. xxii. 29. thee. O Lord; sider and hear me, O Lord my God; lighten mine eyes, lest I sleep the sleep of death. Ps. xiii. 3. Then spake Jesus unto them, saying, I am the light of the world; he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life. John viii. 12. 2. Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by mercy defend night, nor for the arrow that flieth by day, nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness. Ps. xci. 5, 6. He will keep the feet of his saints. 1 Sa. ii. 9. Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep: the Lord is thy keeper; the Lord is thy shade upon thy right hand. Ps. cxxi. 4, 5. When thou liest down, thou shalt not be afraid; yea, thou shalt lie down, and thy sleep shall be sweet. Pr. iii. 24. I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep; for thou, Lord, only makest me dwell in safety. Ps. iv. 8. I laid me down and slept; I awaked, for the Lord sustained me. 3. The love of Christ which passeth knowledge. Ep. iii. 19. Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. John xv. 13. Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life, that I might take it again. John x. 17. As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you; continue ye in my love. John xv. 9. We have seen and do testify that the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world. 1 John iv. 14. In that day ye shall ask me nothing Verily, verily, I say unto you, whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give it you; for the Father himself loveth you, because ye have loved me, and have believed that I came out from God. XVI. The Creed of St. Athanasius.

1, 2. What must I do to be saved? Believe on soever will be the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved. all things it is Ac. xvi. 30, 31. Thou whose name alone is Jehovah, art the Most High over all the earth. P's. lxxxiii. 18. This is his name whereby he shall be called, the Lord [Jehovah] our righteousness. Je. xxiii. 6. The hand of the Lord God [Jehovah] fell upon me, and he put forth the form of an hand, and the Spirit lifted me up. Ez. viii. 1. 3. The testimony of two men is true; I am one that bear witness of myself, and the Father that sent me beareth witness of me. John viii. 17, 18. When the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me. John xv. 26.
