Though ye have ten thousand instructors in Christ, yet have ye not many fathers; for in Christ sent unto you Jesus I have begotten you through the gospel. 1 Cor. iv. 15. Which Offices were evermore had in such reverend estimation, that no man might presume to execute any of them, except he were first called, tried, examined, and known to have such Qualities as are requisite for the same; and also by Public Prayer, with imposition of Hands, were approved and admitted thereunto by lawful Authority. And therefore, to the intent that these Orders may be continued, and reverently used and esteemed in the Church of England; no Man shall be accounted or taken to be a lawful Bishop, Priest, or Deacon in the United Church of England and Ireland, or suffered to execute any of the said Functions, except he be called, tried, examined, and admitted thereunto, according to the Form hereafter following, or hath had formerly Episcopal Consecration, or Ordination. And none shall be admitted a Deacon, except he be Twenty three Years of age, unless he have a Faculty. And every man which is to be admitted a Priest shall be full Four and Twenty Years old. And every man which is to be ordained or consecrated Bishop shall be fully Thirty Years of age. And the Bishop knowing, either by himself, or by sufficient Testimony, any Person to be a Man of virtuous Conversation, and without Crime; and, after Examination and Trial, finding him learned in the Latin Tongue, and sufficiently instructed in holy Scripture, may at the times appointed in the Canon, or else, on urgent Occasion, upon some other Sunday or Holy-day, in the face of the Church, admit him a Deacon, in such Manner and Form as hereafter followeth. multitude of the disciples unto them, and said, Look ye out among you seven men of honest report, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom, whom we may appoint. I have enquired of them, and also examined them, and think them so to be. 4. Brethren, if there be any of you who knoweth any Impediment or notable Crime in any of these persons presented to be ordered Deacons, for the which he ought not to be admitted to that Office, let him come forth in the name of God, and shew what the Crime or Impediment is. 2, 3, 4. Lay hands suddenly on no man, neither be partaker of other men's sins. 1 Tim. v. 22. Likewise must the Deacons be grave, not doubletongued, not given to much wine, not greedy of filthy lucre: holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience. . That it thee to these thy servants, now of Deacons [or Priests] and to pour thy grace upon them; that they may duly And let these also first be proved; then let them use the office of a Deacon, being found blameless. Not a novice, lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil. 1 Tim. iii. 8, 9, 10. 6. The servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient, in meekness instructing those that oppose themselves. 2 Tim. ii. 24, 25. Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God. 1 John iv. 1.
