CCLIII. A Prayer for the Candidates for the office
of Deacon.

1. Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Matt. xxviii. 18. When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men. gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and thy Church, some, evangelists; and some pastors and teachers. Eph. iv. 8. 11. God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers. 1 Cor. xii. 28. And no man taketh this honour unto himself, but he that is called of God, as was Aaron. Heb. v. 4. As my Father hath sent me, even so send I you. John xx. 21. And, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Matt. xxviii. 20. Wherefore, brethren, look ye out among you seven men of honest report, full of wisdom, whom we may appoint. And they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Ghost, and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolas a proselyte of Antioch : whom they set before the apostles: and when they had prayed, they laid their hands on them. When He, the Spirit of truth, is come, He Saviour Jesus will guide you into all truth. John xiv. 16, 17, 26. xvi. 13. Be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity. 1 Tim. iv. 12. Speak thou the things which become sound doctrine; in all things shewing thyself a pattern of good works: in doctrine shewing uncorruptness, gravity, sincerity, sound speech, that cannot be condemned. Titus ii. 1. 7, 8. Likewise must the Deacons be grave, not doubletongued, not given to much wine, not greedy of filthy lucre; holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience. Let them use the office of a Deacon, being found blameless. Even so must their wives be grave, not slanderers, sober, faithful in all things. Let the Deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well. For they that have used the office of a Deacon well, purchase to themselves a good degree, and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus. 1 Tim. iii. 8 to 13. Continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them. 2 Tim. iii. 14. Say to Archippus, Take heed to the ministry which thou hast received in the Lord, that thou fulfil it. Col. iv. 17. Moreover it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful. 1 Cor. iv. 2. Be thou faithful unto death. Rev. ii. 10. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven. Matt. v. 16. Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit. John

xv. 8. We have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us. 2 Cor. iv. 7. Seek that ye may excel to the edifying of the Church. 1 Cor. xiv. 12. If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God; if any man minister, let him do it as of the ability which God giveth: that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom be praise and dominion for ever and ever. Amen. 1 Pet. iv. 11.

Wherefore, brethren, losk ye out among you seven men of honest report, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business. But we will give ourselves continually to prayer, and to the ministry of the Word. And the saying pleased the whole multitude: And they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Ghost, and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolas a proselyte of Antioch; whom they set before the Apostles: and, when they had prayed, they laid their hands on them. And the Word of God increased; and the number of the disciples multiplied in Jerusalem greatly; and a great company of the Priests were obedient to the faith.

CCLIV. The Oath of the King's Sovereignty.

I A. B. do swear, That I do from my heart, abhor, detest, and abjure, as impious and heretical, that damnable doctrine, and position, That Princes excommunicated or deprived by the Pope, or any authority of the see of Rome, may be deposed or murthered by their subjects, or any other whatsoever. And I do declare, That no foreign Prince, Person, Prelate, State, or Potentate, hath, or ought to have, any jurisdiction, power, superiority, pre-eminence, or authority, Ecclesiastical or Spiritual, within this Realm.

Thou shalt do no murder. Matt. xix. 18. Honour all men. Honour the King. 1 Pet. ii. 17. And David said, Destroy him not: for who can stretch forth his hand against the Lord's anointed, and be guiltless? 1 Sam. xxvi. 9. And David said to Solomon his son, Be strong and of good courage, fear not, nor be dismayed for the Lord God, even my God, will be with thee; he will not fail thee nor forsake thee, until thou hast finished all the work for the service of the house of the Lord.
