of the Equator to abolish the slave trade, and to allow the right of search in any vessels of the two countries which are suspected of having slaves on board. Meetings have been lately held in different parts of England to introduce missionaries into Borneo: Mr. Brooke, the Rajah of Sarawak, and Captain Keppel, were present. The former spoke very encouragingly of the prospects of the mission. His description of the Malay character was that of gentleness and inoffensiveness, so that the most timid lady might, without hazard, risk himself among them. The rich Baboos, at Calcutta, have been greatly excited at Dr. Duff's success in his Christian school. They are endeavouring to form a new school for Hindoos, and passed resolutions to prohibit any persons of that creed from frequenting the Christian school. This Dr. Duff says is ILLEGAL. It is an evidence, however, of the quiet progress of Christianity. The Irish Society's statistics are interesting. There are 689 Teachers employed by it, 103 Scripture readers, and five Irish clergymen engaged. But while we think of our own and neighbouring countries, we must not forget the destitution of our Colonies. The Bishop of Tasmania gives a frightful account of the state of society in Australia and Van Diemen's Land. He says the population has been estimated in the latter place at 60,000; 30,000 of these were convicts. The other 30,000 were mostly those who had gained their liberty, or were the children of convicts. In 1844 the convicts exceeded the free population by 1022; and so great was the moral degradation of the country, that there had been 3000 trials for offences committed that year. CHRONOLOGY OF THE BIBLE. Ir has been well said that chronology and geography are the two eyes of history. Every student of the Bible must be aware how great is the importance, in order to the correct understanding of the sacred text, of bearing in mind the dates of the events, and the situations of the places, which are mentioned. We think, therefore, that our readers will thank us for transferring to our pages, in an abridged form, the following chronological table of the chief events recorded in Scripture, taken from Vol. III. of Mr. Hartwell Horne's valuable 66 Introduction to the Study of the Scriptures." We include the tables in one number, that they may be of convenient access to the Teacher, who will thus have a good table of Scripture dates always at hand, in a portable form. PART I. PERIOD I.
