OCCASIONAL PRAYERS

AND

THANKSGIVINGS.

(It is supposed that these will be introduced, according to the taste and designs of the Worshippers, into the preceding Forms. As they are thus intended only as intermediate petitions, they open and close with equal abruptness. Pronoun and Number can be suited to the circumstances.)

PRAYER FOR PROTECTION IN JOURNEYING.

WE would pray to Thee, O Lord! for Thy Care over them who are going forth from this abode to tarry a while elsewhere. Save them from every danger to which they may be exposed in their travel. Now God Himself and our Father, and our Lord Jesus Christ, direct their way. However severed from them, and they from us, by space, may we be alike in Thy hand and in Thy heart. The Lord watch between us and them, when we are absent one

from another. May it be a prosperous journey by the will of God!

THANKSGIVING FOR JOURNEYING MERCIES.

WE bless Thee, O Thou Who preservest man and beast, that Thou hast fulfilled our petitions. Once more we meet around our domestic altar. Thou hast restored such as were separate from their brethren. Thou hast been with them, and kept them in the way, and they are come again to their house in peace. Oh when our pilgrimage of life shall cease, may there be a purer greeting and a happier re-union in the mansions of our Father's house! where only is unchanging habitation! where we shall go no more out!

PRAYER FOR HELP AND SAFETY IN CHILD-BIRTH.

O THOU Who alone canst comfort us in all our tribulation, killing yet making alive! Behold and pity in this domestic crisis. We seem to hang between life and death in our deep sympathy for Thine handmaiden, now suffering the

woe of being first in the transgression. May she be saved by the Child-bearing of Immanuel! For unto us that Child was born! Unto us that Son was given! Spare the mother's life. Give her living increase. We would hail the young immortal. Let our pity melt, and our

supplication travail, for the child of wrath, the little one which can be only shapen in iniquity. Jesus! suffer it to come unto Thee! Thou Who didst lie in the manger! hear its cry and pity its suffering! Father in heaven! it is not Thy will that it should perish in its present helplessness. Let it be raised up with a vigorous constitution of body and of mind. May it be a child of the Promise. Long may the parents, and they whom thou hast given them, be preserved to each other, every added voice learning and striving to bless Thee!

THANKSGIVING FOR THE SAME.

BLESS the Lord, O our souls! and forget not all His benefits! Thou hast relieved our suspense, Thou hast disappointed our fear. We cried unto the Lord, and He heard us! The sorrows of death were near, and this might have been the house of mourning! What things

might have befallen us!

What a void might

our eye have felt!

We cannot praise Thee as

we would,-we shall never praise Thee as we

ought!

PRAYER ON THE DEATH OF AN INFANT.

THOU, O God of the Covenant! hast brought

in a breach upon us.

Thou didst increase us,

and the babe came forth as a flower.

We asked

it of the Lord, and long as it lived we would have lent it to the Lord. We are dumb, we open not our mouth, because Thou didst it. Thou hast taken it from us, and its spirit now sees its Father's face. It is of such as compose and beautify the kingdom of heaven. It is in favour with God. Angels minister to it. None offend nor despise the little one. It is well with the child. May we go to it, though it shall not return to us!

PRAYER FOR THE CONVERSION OF CHILDREN.

WE would kneel at Thy footstool, O God of our fathers! earnestly supplicating Thee on be

half of these the younger members of our family. Let not a reproach of youth stain them. May they from childhood know the Holy Scriptures which are able to make them wise unto salvation. Decide their hearts for Thee. While their hearts are yet tender, may they humble themselves unto Thee! May they seek Thee early and find Thee! May they be as plants grown up in their youth, and be Thou a dew upon them! May they be planted in the House of the Lord! May they be holy not only by their dedication, but by being renewed through the power of the Holy Ghost. of the Holy Ghost. With some of us, the day is far spent. For us the evening shade is drawing on. May these more than supply our place! May they be pillars in firmly supporting Thy cause! May they be burning and shining lights of divine instruction and quenchless zeal! We would hang upon Thee, and devote to Thee, the offspring and the issue!

PRAYER FOR THE CONVERSION OF SERVANTS.

WILL it please Thee to remember those who serve in this household! In the spirit of him who prayed unto our Incarnate Lord, Heal my servant,—we would sincerely entreat the spiri
