"Thou shalt hear the word at my mouth, and warn them from me. When I say unto the wicked, O wicked man, thou shalt surely die; if thou dost not speak to warn the wicked from his way, that wicked man shall die in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at thine hand." Ezek. xxxiii. 7, 8.

"Other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ. Now, if any man build upon this foundation-every man's work shall be made manifest-and the fire shall try every man's work of what sort it is. If any man's work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward. If any man's work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire." 1 Cor. iii. 11-15.

166. 2.

"Are ye not my work in the Lord?-The seal of mine apostleship are ye in the Lord." 1 Cor. ix. 1, 2.

"Ye are an epistle written in our hearts, known and read of all men. Forasmuch as ye are manifestly declared to be the epistle of Christ ministered by us, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God; not in tables of stone, but in fleshly tables of the heart. Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think any thing as of ourselves; but our sufficiency is of God." 2 Cor. iii. 2, 3. 5. 167. With whom would this be an inconsistent prayer?

1. With them, clergy or laity, who forget the mutual responsibility of that ministry which.

Christ ordained. With them, who speak of the clergy as mere men, without remembering their mission and their authority. 2. With them, clergy or laity, who expect a profit without God's blessing. With them who reject, or criticise a servant of God, forgetting that he is but the earthen vessel, bringing to their lips the living water.

Prayer of St. Chrysostom.

168. Was this prayer composed by St. Chrysostom? (4 C.)

We cannot be sure that it was. It has borne his name from having been very anciently used in the Liturgy of Constantinople; which Liturgy Chrysostom is said to have corrected or enlarged.

169. Why is this a valuable prayer with reference to the great doctrine of the Atonement? Because it is addressed to Jesus Christ as God; showing that such was the doctrine of the Church in the early time of the prayer's construction.

170. To what promise of our Lord Jesus Christ does the prayer refer?

Where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.” Matt. xviii. 20.

171. Is it Scriptural to pray directly to the Lord Jesus Christ?

"They stoned Stephen, calling upon God, and bosaying, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit." Acts vii. 59.

"For this thing I besought the Lord thrice, that it might depart from me." 2 Cor. xii. 8. 66 And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us: and if we know that he heareth us whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desire of him." 1 John v. 14, 15.

172. And the Scripture teaches us, also, to ask of the Lord Jesus Christ, to grant as He sees best?

"We know not what we should pray for as we ought." Rom. viii. 26.

"We have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are.' Heb. iv. 15.

173. Who are convicted by this prayer as inconsistent Christians?

1. They, who forget the reverence due to the immediate presence of the Lord Jesus Christ at our times of prayer.

2. They, who seek their own will determinately and perversely; when to obtain our will is often a bitter curse.

174. Why do you not add, "They, who deny the divinity of our Lord?”

Because such are not Christians; and cannot be members of the Church of England.

Benediction.

175. Is the habit of a concluding benediction an

early one?

It would appear to have been Apostolic. 176. And this form of benediction?

To have been also of Apostolic use: its use in the Eastern Liturgies is recorded for 1500 years.

EVENING PRAYER.

The Evening Service is similar to the Morning till the conclusion of the Lessons; and we have already noticed the injunction of the Council of Laodicea in the fourth century, that the Lessons and Psalms should alternate.

177. Has the "Magnificat" been long in use? By name in this place for 1000 years.

178. How is it that "Cantate Domino" is offered as a change?

The ancient writer, who speaks of "Magnificat," states that before his time a Psalm was often used.

179. Is the "Nunc Dimittis" of ancient use? It is named by the writer before referred to, 1000 years ago; it is of ancient use in the Liturgy of Constantinople, and still used there; and it is found as an appointment for Evening Prayer 1500 years ago.

180. And the 67th Psalm ?

Is included in the remark on the 98th.

Collect for Peace.

181. The Collect for peace?

Occurs in the Roman Liturgy, 1350 years ago, and can be traced back in our own Church 1200 years; but, as we have said of other prayers, this is merely its recorded age, and does not reach its origin.

182. What is the doctrine of this collect?
1. That God is the Author of all holiness.
2. That this world cannot give peace.

3. That God can; that peace including obedience and protection.

183. Give me God's word for this: 1.

God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them." Eph. ii. 4, 5. 10.

"Put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness." Eph. iv. 24.

184. 2.

66

I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and, behold, all is vanity and vexation of spirit." Eccl. i. 14.

"Verily, every man at his best state is altogether vanity." Ps. xxxix. 5.

185. 3.

"To be spiritually minded is life and peace." Rom. viii. 6.
