The seer meets him, after he had gone out with the wicked king of Israel, and said unto him, Shouldest thou help the ungodly, and love them that hate the Lord? Therefore is wrath upon thee from before the Lord.-2 Chron xix. 1; 2. xx. 33. 37. Hezekiah did that which was right in the sight of the Lord. He removed the high places, &c. He trusted in the Lord God of Israel; so that after him was none like him, &c. for he clave to the Lord, and departed not from following him, &c.-2 Kings xviii. 1. 3-6. 2 Chron. xxxi. 21.

When Isaiah had told Hezekiah, being sick, that he should be healed, &c. he said unto Isaiah, What shall be the sign that the Lord will heal me? &c. He shewed his treasures to the messengers of the king of Babylon's son: for which God was angry, &c. Hezekiah rendered not again according to the benefit done unto him; for his heart was lifted up: therefore there was wrath upon him, &c. In the business of the ambassadors of the princes of Babylon, &c. God left him, to try him, that he might know all that was in his heart.-2 Kings xx. 8,9. 12-18. 2 Chron. xxxii. 25. 31. Good Josiah (though warned to the contrary) followed Pharaoh Necho, and was slain.-2 Chron. xxxv. 20-23. Job, that man was perfect and upright, one that feared God and eschewed evil. Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man? &c. Ye have not spoken of me the thing which is right, like my servant Job, &c. Ye have heard of the patience of Job.-Job i. 1. 8. xlii. 8. James v. 11.

After this opened Job his mouth, and cursed his day, &c.-See at large, Job iii. 1, &c.

O that I might have my request, and that God would grant me the thing that I long for, even that it would please God to destroy me, that

he would let loose his hand and cut me off, &c. So that my soul chooseth strangling, and death, rather than life, &c. He confesseth thus: I have uttered that I understood not; things too wonderful for me, which I knew not; wherefore I abhor myself, and repent in dust and ashes.-Job vi. 8, 9. vii. 15. xlii. 3. 6.

As for me, my feet were almost gone, &c. for I was envious at the foolish, when I saw the prosperity of the wicked, &c. Verily I have cleansed my heart in vain, &c. So foolish was I, and ignorant, as a beast, &c. -Ps. lxxiii. 2,3. 13. 22. Jer. xxi. 1, 2.

Will the Lord cast off for ever? Will he be favourable no more? Is his mercy clean gone for ever? Doth his promise fail for evermore? Hath God forgotten to be gracious? Hath he in anger shut up his tender mercies ? I said, this is mine infirmity.-Ps. lxxvii. 7-10.

The prophet Jeremiah in his afflictions spake hard words of God; said, he would not speak in his name, &c. curseth the day of his birth.-Jer. xx. 7. 9. 14, &c. xii. 1.

The church, the spouse of Christ, in a sluggish posture.-Cant. v. 2, 3. Matt. xxv. 5.

The prophet Jonah was very angry because God spared Nineveh, and said, Therefore now, O Lord, take, I beseech thee, my life from me; for it is better for me to die than to live. Then said the Lord, Doest thou well to be angry? &c. again he said so: and Jonah said, I do well to be angry, even unto death.-Jonah iv. 1–4. 8, 9. i. 1-3.

John sent two of his disciples to Christ, and said unto him, Art thou he that should come, or do we look for another?-Matt. xi. 2, 3.

When Zacharias had a son promised him, he said unto the angel, Whereby shall I know this, for I am an old man, and my wife well stricken in years, &c. Behold, thou shalt be dumb, &c. because thou believest not my words, &c.-Luke i. 13. 18. 20.

Jesus said unto Peter, Blessed art thou, Simon, &c.-Matt. xvi. 17.

Jesus said unto Peter, O thou of little faith! wherefore didst thou doubt?-Matt. xiv. 31. viii. 24-26. When Jesus spake of his being killed, Peter said, Be it far from thee, Lord; this shall not be unto thee: but he turned and said unto Peter, Get thee behind me, Satan; thou art an offence unto me; for thou savour est not the things that be of God, but those that be of men, &c. Thou wast with Jesus, &c. But he denied before them all, saying, I know not what thou sayest, &c. And again he denied with an oath, I do not know the man. Then began he to curse and swear, I know not the man, &c. Matt. xvi. 21-23. xxvi. 69, 70. 72. 74. When the disciples could not cure the poor man's son, he came to Jesus; Jesus said of his disciples, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I suffer you?-Matt. xvii. 15, 16. When Peter was come to Antioch, I withstood him to the face, because he was to be blamed: for before that certain came from James, he did eat with the Gentiles; but when they were come, he withdrew, and separated himself, fearing them which were of the circumcision. And the other Jews dissembled likewise with him, insomuch that Barnabas also was carried away with their dissimulation. — Gal. ii.

him and fled, &c. Jesus saith unto them, Why reason ye because ye have no bread? Perceive ye not yet, neither understand? Have ye your hearts yet hardened? Do ye not remember, when I brake the five loaves? &c.— Matt. xxvi. 51.56. John xvi. 32. Mark viii. 17-19. John vi. 52.

And there was also a strife amongst them, which of them should be accounted the greatest. Jesus appeared unto the eleven, &c. and upbraided them with their unbelief, and hardness of heart, because they believed not them which had seen him, &c.-Luke xxii. 24. Mark xvi. 14. Luke xxiv. 21. 25

Christ rebuked his disciples for their great fear in the storm.-Mark iv. 37-41. ix. 6.

Master, we saw one casting out devils in thy name, and we forbad him, because he followed not with us. And Jesus said, Forbid him not, &c. James and John would have had fire come down from heaven upon the Samaritans; Jesus rebuked them, and said, Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of, &c. Thomas said, Except I shall see in his hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, &c. I will not believe, &c.-Luke ix. 49, 50. 54, 55. John xx. 25.

Joseph of Arimathæ, though a disciple, yet secrectly for fear of the Jews, &c.-John xix. 38, 39.

The church praying for Peter did not believe his deliverance: for when he knocked at the door, and the damsel had acknowledged she heard his voice, they believed not.-Acts xii. 5. 12-16.

Paul said, I have lived in all good conscience before God until this day. Barnabas and Paul, men that have hazarded their lives for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.-Acts xxiii. 1. xv. 25, 26.

Barnabas determined to take with them John, &c. but Paul thought not good to take him with them, &c. And the contention was so sharp, that they

departed asunder one from the other, &c.-Acts xv. 37-39. xxiii. 3.

Paul complains thus, I have no man like-minded, who will naturally care for your state: for all seek their own, not the things which are Jesus Christ's.

When we were come into Macedonia, our flesh had no rest, &c. without were fightings, within were fears.--Phil. ii. 20, 21. 2 Cor. vii. 5.

Paul did what he hated, &c. and said, O wretched man that I am, &c. -Rom. vii. 14, 15. 18, 19. 24. Many saints being compelled, blaspheme.-Acts xxvi. 10, 11.

I brethren could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, as unto babes in Christ. I have fed you with milk, and not with meat: for hitherto ye were not able to bear it, neither yet now are ye able; for ye are yet carnal. There is among you envying and strife, and divisions (or factions). Are ye not carnal, and walk as men? &c. They were very disorderly in the Lord's supper.— 1 Cor. iii. 1-3. xi.

Nay, you do wrong, and defraud, and that your brethren.-1 Cor. vi. 8. Ye suffer fools gladly, &c. Ye suffer if a man bring you into bondage, if a man devour you, if a man take of you, if a man exalt himself, if a man smite you on the face.-2 Cor. xi. 19, 20, I fear, lest when I come I shall not find you such as I would, &c. Lest there be debates, envyings, wraths, strifes, backbitings,whisperings, swellings, tumults: lest when I come again my God will humble me among you, and that I shall bewail many which have sinned already, and have not repented of the uncleanness, and fornication, and lasciviousness, which they have committed.-2 Cor. xii. 20, 21.

I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ, unto another gospel, &c. And now, after that ye have known God, or rather are known of God, how turn ye back to the weak and beggarly elements (or rudiments) whereunto ye desire again to be in bondage? Yeobserve days, and months, and times, and years, &c.-Gal. i. 6. iv. 9-11.

Ye are dull of hearing; for when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk.-Heb. v. 11, 12.

Thou hast borne and hast patience, and for my name's sake hast laboured, and hast not fainted; nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love, &c. to the church of Pergamos, &c. and the church of Thyatira, &c.-See Rev. ii. 3, 4. 12-15. 18-20.

SECT. III. God will punish or correct the righteous for Sin.

GOD was wrath with Moses for his sin, and would not suffer him to go into the good land.-Deut. iii. 25— 27. iv. 21, 22.

God said to Moses, Die in the mount, as Aaron thy brother died in mount Hor: because ye trespassed against me among the children of Israel, &c. Because ye sanctified me not in the eyes of the children of Israel, &c. Because ye believed me not, &c.-Deut. xxxii. 48. 50, 51. Ps. cvi. 32, 33. Numb. xx. 12.

Aaron shall be gathered unto his. people, he shall not enter into the land, &c. because ye rebelled against my word, &c.-Numb. xx. 24.

I will be his father, and he shall be my son: if he commit iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men, and with the stripes of the children of men; but my mercy shall not depart away from him.-2 Sam. vii. 14, 15.

God punished Solomon for his sin in his old age.-1 Kings xi.

David said unto Nathan, I have sinned against the Lord; and Nathan said unto David, The Lord also hath put away thy sin, thou shalt not die; howbeit, because by this deed thou

hast given great occasion to the enemies of the Lord to blaspheme, the child shall surely die.-2 Sam. xii. 13, 14.

Hezekiah sinned, and there was

chasten: be zealous therefore, &c.Rev. iii. 19. Heb. xii. 6—8.

CHAP. XII.

wrath upon him.-2 Chron. xxxii. 25. THE PRIVILEGES OF THE Righteous, 2 Kings xx. 12, &c.

If his children forsake my law, and walk not in my judgments, &c. Then will I visit their transgression with the rod, and their iniquity with stripes. -Ps. lxxxix. 30-32.

The man of God for his disobedience was slain. 1 Kings xiii. 18, &c.

Thou wast a God that forgavest them, though thou tookest vengeance of their inventions.-Ps. xcix. 8.

Christ withdrew himself from his Spouse, when she grew sluggish and mindless of him.-Cant. v. 1, &c.

For the iniquity of his covetousness was I wrath and smote him: I hid me, and was wrath: and he went on frowardly (or turning away) in the way of his heart: I have seen his ways, and I will heal him.-Isa. lvii. 17, 18.

I have forsaken my house, &c. I have given the dearly beloved of my soul into the hands of enemies. Jer. xii. 7-10.

I will correct thee in measure, and will not leave thee altogether unpunished.-Jer. xxx. 11. xlvi. 28.

You only have I known of all the families of the earth: therefore I will punish you for all your iniquities.Amos iii. 2.

When God sent Jonah to Nineveh, he fled from God's presence, &c. but the Lord sent out a great wind, &c. And Jonah was cast into the sea for this.-Jonah i. 1. 4. 10-12. 15.

Zacharias was struck dumb for not believing.-Luke i. 18-20,

For this cause many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep, &c. When we are judged, we are chastened of the Lord, that we should not be condemned with the world.-1 Cor. xi. 30, 31.

THE Lord had respect unto Abel and his offering, &c. If thou dost well, shalt thou not be accepted?—Gen. iv. 4. 7.

Enoch walked with God, and was not, for God took him.-Gen. v. 24. Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord.-Gen. vi. 8.

And the Lord said unto Noah, Come thou and all thy house into the ark: for thee have I seen righteous before me in this generation.-Gen. vii. 1. 2 Pet. ii. 5.

And the Lord plagued Pharaoh and his house with great plagues, because of Sarai, Abram's wife.-Gen. xii. 17. xx. 2, 3.

The word of the Lord came unto Abram in a vision, saying, Fear not Abram, I am thy shield, thy exceeding great reward.—Gen. xv. 1. xvii,

God said, Shall I hide from Abraham that thing which I am about to do? &c. The cry of Sodom, &c. is great, &c. Abraham interceded with God for Sodom, and God granted him as much as he asked.-See at large, Gen. xviii. 17, 18. 20. 23, &c.

When God had sent his angels to destroy Sodom, they said unto Lot, Hast thou any here besides? son-inlaw, and thy sons, and thy daughters, and whatsoever thou hast in the city, bring out of this place, &c. They hastened Lot, saying, Arise, take thy wife, and thy two daughters, which are here, lest thou be consumed. And while he lingered, the men laid hold upon his hand, and upon the hand of his wife, and upon the hand of his two daughters, the Lord being merciful unto him, and they brought

him forth, &c. He prevailed with God to spare Zoar, &c. Haste thee, escape thither: for I cannot do any thing till thou be come thither, &c. God remembered Abraham, and sent Lot out of the midst of the overthrow, &c.-Gen. xix. 12. 15–22. 29. 2 Pet. ii. 6, 7.

And God said unto Abraham, &c. Of the son of the bond-woman will I make a nation, because he is thy seed. -Gen. xxi. 12, 13.

God spake to Jacob friendly, when he fled from his brother Esau.-Gen. xxviii. 13-15.

Laban said unto Jacob, I have learned by experience, that the Lord hath blessed me for thy sake, &c. Jacob said unto him, &c. The Lord hath blessed thee since my coming (or at my foot).-Gen. xxx. 27. 29, 30. Prov. xi. 10, 11.

When Laban was pursuing Jacob, God came to Laban, &c. and said, Take heed that thou speak not to Jacob either good or bad (or from good to bad,) &c. Laban said, It is in the power of my hand to do you hurt : but the God of your father spake unto me yesternight, saying, Take thou heed, &c.-Gen. xxxi. 24. 29.

I

Jacob prevailed with God, &c. have seen God face to face.-Gen. xxxii. 28.30.

When Jacob and his family were journeying, the terror of God was upon the cities round about them; and God appeared unto Jacob again, and blessed him, &c.-Gen. xxxv. 5. 9. 13.

The Lord was with Joseph, and he was a prosperous man, &c. and his master saw that the Lord was with him, and made all that he did to prosper in his hand, &c. The Lord blessed the Egyptian's house for Joseph's sake, &c. The Lord was with Joseph, and gave him favour in the sight of the keeper, &c. When Joseph had the custody of the prisoners, that which he did, the Lord made it to prosper. Gen. xxxix. 2, 3. 5. 21-23.

Joseph said unto his brethren, &c. As for you, ye thought evil against me, but God meant it unto good, to bring to pass as it is this day, &c.— Gen. 1. 19, 20.

God gave Israel favour in the sight of the Egyptians, and Pharaoh's servants and Moses, &c. There shall be a great cry throughout all the land of Egypt, such as there was none like it, &c. But against any of the children of Israel shall not a dog move his tongue, against man or beast that ye may know how that the Lord doth put a difference between the Egyptians and Israel.-Exod. xi. 3. 6,7.

I will pass through the land of Egypt this night, and will smite all the first-born, &c. and the blood shall be to you for a token, &c. When I see the blood, I will pass over you, and the plague shall not be upon you to destroy you, &c.-Exod. xii. 12, 13.

I will dwell among the children of Israel, and will be their God, &c.-Exod. xxix. 45.

When God had said to Moses, Let me alone, that my wrath may wax hot against them, that I may consume them, &e. Moses prayed for Israel, and prevailed often for them: and the Lord said, I have pardoned according to thy word.-Exod.xxxii. 9-15. Numb. xiv. 11-13. 19, 20.

And the Lord spake unto Moses face to face, as a man speaketh unto his friend, &c. When Moses had said, I beseech thee, shew me thy glory: He said, I will make all my goodness pass before thee, &c.-Exod. xxxiii. 11. 17-19. xix. 19, 20. xxxiv. 2,3. 5,6.

My servant Moses is not so, who is faithful in all mine house: with him will I speak mouth to mouth; even apparently, and not in dark speeches and the similitude of the Lord shall he behold.-Numb. xii. 7,8.

He hath blessed, and I cannot reverse it. He hath not beheld iniquity in Jacob, neither hath he seen perverseness in Israel: the Lord his
