A. (In round numbers) the seventieth day before Easter: so also, Sexagesima, the sixtieth; Quinquagesima, the fiftieth; Quadragesima, the fortieth, or first Sunday in Lent.

Q. What is Lent?

A. The commemoration of the fasting of our Blessed Saviour, during Forty Days.

Q. What is the meaning of the word Lent? A. An old English word for the spring season, in which this fast is kept.

Q. What is the first day of Lent?

A. Ash-Wednesday, dies cinĕrum, because penitents on this day cast ashes on their head, in token of humiliation.

Q. What is the last day of Lent?

A. Easter-day is the first Sunday after the full moon which happens upon, or next after, the twenty-first of March.

Q. When is the day of the Ascension?

A. On Holy Thursday, exactly forty days after Easter.

Q. What is Whit-Sunday?

A. The day on which the Holy Ghost descended on the Apostles.

Q. By what other name is it called?

A. The day of Pentecost,' or the fiftieth day after Easter.

A. Holy Men, whose example we pray God to be permitted to imitate.

A. Four weeks of the year, commonly appointed for the ordination of priests and deacons; one in each of the four seasons.
