SUGGESTED PLAN OF WORK BY WEEKS

Many teachers will appreciate a definite plan of work that prescribes a certain amount to be accomplished each week. The plan that follows is merely suggestive. Many experienced teachers may prefer to follow a plan of their own, and will probably get better results from the book by disregarding the plan of work by weeks; but other teachers will find it helpful. It may also be interesting to pupils to know just what is expected of them at different stages of the journey. The work outlined provides for four periods a week for thirty-six weeks in Part One and for five periods for thirty-four weeks in Part Two, leaving two weeks for optional work. A school that allows more or less time than this will need to make an adjustment to suit its own program.

The drill on speech errors should be given daily, with special emphasis each week on common faults. These speech errors include errors in syntax, in pronunciation, in enunciation, and in tone quality. These errors are not specified in the weekly plan of work because each class presents its own problems. The exercises in Correct Usage will be helpful as drills on common grammatical errors. The aim of the teacher should be to interest the pupils in speech improvement and to lead them to concentrate on one or two errors each week.
