HE first occasion of the ensuing treatise was •

the request of a friend, that I would overlook an old book upon this fubje£t, printed in King James I. reign, and would put it into modern English. Which þaving undertaken, to avoid the tediousness of one continued discourse, without any manner of divifion, I thought it necessary to cast mine into several

parts, that, at the end of each, the reader might bave 4 breatbing-time, and fo proceed to what follows with tbe better appetite. And, in a little time, finding fome texts of Scripture not so properly applied as ought to have been, fome things more largely inffed upon than I apprehend necessary, and many, on the A 2
