THE plan upon which the following Index has been
constructed may be explained in few words. Perspi-
cuity is the object desired in a book of reference: it
has been thought that this might be best attained by a
separation of the names of persons from the various
subjects.

The First Part contains the NAMES of all the Authors
reviewed, with a reference to every personal name
incidentally introduced. Under the name of the Author
are given the facts and observations derived from his
book; in the Second Part, those remarks and elucida-
tions are brought together that more particularly be-
long to the subject treated of: this is especially the
case in the description of countries, the geographical
knowledge being frequently derived from observation
on the spot. This Second Part contains the references
to the SUBJECTS examined, and to the moral and philo-
sophical reflections scattered throughout the volumes.

The Third Part forms a compendious index to the
several Quarterly Lists of New Publications. The
