TO THE PUBLIC.

DOCTOR PAUL WRIGHT, an eminent divine of the Church of England, has recently acquired great celebrity as a writer on religious subjects. Among his excellent and voluminous publications, none have met with a better reception than his HISTORY OF JESUS CHRIST, accompanied with short sketches of THE LIVES OF THE APOSTLES AND SEVERAL PRIMITIVE CHRISTIANS.

The subject itself is highly important and entertaining, and executed with judgment and fidelity. Wisely taking scripture for his guide, he has neither neglected the early traditions and history of the church, nor placed undue reliance on them. The arrangement of the work is easy and happy: His illustrations of the discourses, the miracles and the character of our Blessed Saviour, are useful, pertinent and judicious: His style is peculiarly suitable to the subject, equally removed from the offensive inele elegance of our old, and from the elaborate fastidiousness of our modern Biographers.

It has often occurred to the subscriber, and it has frequently been suggested by his friends, that the size and the price of former editions have greatly impeded the diffusion of this work. Anxious to promote the more extensive spread of this valuable and popular treatise, instead of the folio page, and the large type, on which this work has hitherto appeared both in England and America, he has printed this edition on a handsome portable octavo, and offers it to the admirers of this work, at less than half the price of those copies now in the hands of the public, Recommendations of the work might have been procured in great abundance, from divines distinguished for piety, learning and tasteBut from such application for recommending a work so generally known and admired, he has been restrained lest he should incur the charge of parade and ostentation,
