a graven image, the similitude of any figure, the likeness of male or female; The likeness of any beast that is on the earth, the likeness of any winged fowl that flieth in the air; The likeness of any thing that creepeth on the ground, the likeness of any fish that is in the waters beneath the earth: And lest thou lift up thine eyes unto heaven, and when thou seest the sun, and the moon, and the stars, even all the host of heaven, shouldest be driven to worship them, and serve them, which the Lord thy God hath divided unto all nations under the whole heaven.

SECTION VII.

(See Exod. xx. 5, 6. and Deut. v. 9, 10.) Jer. vii. 18-20. The children gather wood, and the fathers kindle the fire, and the women knead their dough, to make cakes to the queen of heaven, and to pour out drink offering unto other gods, that they may provoke me to anger. Do they provoke me to anger? saith the Lord: do they not provoke themselves, to the confusion of their own faces? Therefore thus saith the Lord God, Behold, mine anger and my fury shall be poured out upon this place, upon man, and upon beast, and upon the trees of the field, and upon the fruit of the ground; and it shall burn, and shall not be quenched. 1 Cor. x. 20–22. But I say, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils, and not to God and I would not that ye should have fellowship with devils. Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of the Lord's table, and of the table of devils. Do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? are we stronger than he? Josh. xxiv. 19. And Joshua said unto the people, Ye cannot serve the Lord; for he is an holy God; he is a jealous God; he will not forgive your transgressions nor your sins. Nahum. i. 2. God is jealous, and the Lord revengeth; the Lord revengeth, and is furious: the Lord will take vengeance on his ad. versaries, and he reserveth wrath for his enemies. Psal. xxix. 5. How long, Lord? wilt thou be angry for ever?

shall thy jealousy burn like fire? Isai. xlv. 16. They shall be ashamed, and also confounded, all of them: they shall go to confusion together that are makers of idols. 1 Cor. vi. 9. Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolators, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind. Rev. xxi. 4. And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away. Acts xv. 20. 29. But that we write unto them, that they abstain from pollutions of idols, and from fornication, and from things strangled, and from blood: That ye abstain from meats offered to idols, and from blood, and from things strangled, and from fornication: from which if ye keep yourselves, ye shall do well. Fare ye well. 1 John v. 21. Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen.

And

Exod. xxxii. 34, 35. Therefore now go, lead the people unto the place of which I have spoken unto thee: behold, mine Angel shall go before thee: nevertheless, in the day when I visit, I will visit their sins upon them. the Lord plagued the people, because they made the calf, which Aaron made. Lev. xviii. 25. And the land is defiled: therefore I do visit the iniquity thereof upon it, and the land itself vomiteth out her inhabitants. Psal. lxxxix. 32. Then will I visit their transgression with the rod, and their iniquity with stripes. Jer. v. 9. Shall I not visit for these things? saith the Lord and shall not my soul be avenged on such a nation as this? Jer. xxiii. 33, 34. And when this people, or the prophet, or a priest, shall ask thee, saying, What is the burden of the Lord ? thou shalt then say unto them, What burden? I will even forsake you, saith the Lord. And as for the prophet, and the priest, and the people, that shall say, The

burden of the Lord, I will even punish that man and his house. Ezek. xviii. 2—5. 9. 19-21.30. What mean ye, that ye use this proverb concerning the land of Israel, saying, The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children's teeth are set on edge? As I live, saith the Lord God, ye shall not have occasion any more to use this proverb in Israel. Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sinneth, it shall die. But if a man be just, and do that which is lawful and right, Hath walked in my statutes, and hath kept my judgments, to deal truly; he is just, he shall surely live, saith the Lord God. Yet say ye, Why? doth not the son bear the iniquity of the father? When the son hath done that which is lawful and right, and hath kept all my statutes, and hath done them, he shall surely live. The soul that sinneth, it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son; the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him. But if the wicked will turn from all his sins that he hath committed, and keep all my statutes, and do that which is lawful and right, he shall surely live, he shall not die. Therefore I will judge you, O house of Israel, every one according to his ways, saith the Lord God. Repent, and turn yourselves from all your transgressions; so iniquity shall not be your ruin. Rom. viii. 28. And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.

SECTION IX.

John xiv. 21. He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved

The Lord shall increase you more and more, you and your children. Deut. v. 29. O that there were such a heart in them, that they would fear me, and keep my commandments always, that it might be well with them, and with their children for ever! Psal. v. 12. A man shall not be established by wickedness; but the root of the righteous shall not be moved. Rom. x. 5. For Moses describeth the righteousness which is of the law, That the man which doeth those things shall live by them. Deut. iv. 40. Rev. xxii. 14. Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.

MORNING PRAYER. Exhortation.....And although we ought at all times humbly to acknowledge our sins before God; yet ought we most chiefly so to do, when we assemble and meet together, to render thanks for the great benefits that we have received at his hands, to set forth his most worthy praise, to hear his most holy Word, and to ask those things which are requisite and necessary as well for the body as the soul.
