The parable of the talents.

S. MATTHEW. Description of the last judgment.

14 For the kingdom of heaven is as a him, then shall he sit upon the throne of man travelling into a far country, who call- his glory:

ed his own servants, and delivered unto 32 And before him shall be gathered all them his goods. nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats:

15 And unto one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one; to every man according to his several ability; and straightway took his journey.

16 Then he that had received the five talents, went and traded with the same, and made them other five talents.

17 And likewise he that had received two, he also gained other two.

18 But he that had received one, went and digged in the earth, and hid his lord's money.

33 And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left.

34 Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world:

35 For I was a hungered, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in:

36 Naked, and ye clothed me: I was 19 After a long time the lord of those sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, servants cometh, and reckoneth with and ye came unto me. them.

20 And so he that had received five talents, came and brought other five talents, saying, Lord, thou deliveredst unto me five talents: behold, I have gained besides them five talents more.

21 His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.

22 He also that had received two talents came, and said, Lord, thou deliveredst unto me two talents: behold, I have gained two other talents besides them.

37 Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee a hungered, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink?

38 When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee? 39 Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee?

40 And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily, I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.

41 Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:

42 For I was a hungered, and ye gave faithful over a few things, I will make thee me no meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.

24 Then he which had received the one talent came, and said, Lord, I knew thee that thou art a hard man, reaping where thou hast not sown, and gathering where thou hast not strewed:

25 And I was afraid, and went and hid thy talent in the earth: lo, there thou hast that is thine.

43 I was a stranger, and ye took me not in: naked, and ye clothed me not: sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not.

44 Then shall they also answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungered, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee?

45 Then shall he answer them, saying, 26 His lord answered and said unto him, Verily,I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did Thou wicked and slothful servant, thou it not to one of the least of these, ye did knewest that I reap where I sowed not, and gather where I have not strewed:

Conspiracy against Christ.

Christ prays at Gethsemane.

5 But they said, Not on the feast-day, thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink lest there be an uproar among the people. ye all of it; 6 Now when Jesus was in Bethany, in the house of Simon the leper,

7 There came unto him a woman having an alabaster-box of very precious ointment, and poured it on his head as he sat at meat. 8 But when his disciples saw it, they had indignation; saying, To what purpose is this waste?

28 For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.

29 But I say unto you, I will not drink henceforth of this fruit of the vine, until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father's kingdom.

30 And when they had sung a hymn,

9 For this ointment might have been they went out into the mount of Olives. sold for much, and given to the poor. 31 Then saith Jesus unto them, All ye

10 When Jesus understood it, he said shall be offended because of me this night: unto them, Why trouble ye the woman? for it is written, I will smite the Shepherd, for she hath wrought a good work upon me. and the sheep of the flock shall be scatter11 For ye have the poor always with ed abroad. you; but me ye have not always.

32 But after I am risen again, I will go

12 For in that she hath poured this before you into Galilee. ointment on my body, she did it for my 33 Peter answered and said unto him, burial. 19 And the disciples did as Jesus had appointed them; and they made ready the passover.

21 And as they did eat,he said, Verily I say unto you, That one of you shall betray me. 22 And they were exceeding sorrowful, and began every one of them to say unto him, Lord, is it I?

23 And he answered and said, He that dippeth his hand with me in the dish, the same shall betray me.

on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless, not as I will, but as thou wilt.

40 And he cometh unto the disciples, and findeth them asleep, and saith unto Peter, What! could ye not watch with me one hour?

41 Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.

42 He went away again the second time, and prayed, saying, Ö iny Father, if this cup may not pass away from me, except I drink it, thy will be done.

24 The Son of man goeth, as it is writ- 43 And he came and found them asleep ten of him: but wo unto that man by whom again: for their eyes were heavy. the Son of man is betrayed! it had been 44 And he left them, and went away good for that man if he had not been born. again, and prayed the third time, saying 25 Then Judas, which betrayed him, the same words.

answered and said, Master, is it I? He said 45 Then cometh he to his disciples, unto him, Thou hast said. and saith unto them, Sleep on now, and 26 And as they were eating, Jesus take your rest: behold, the hour is at hand, took bread, and blessed it, and brake it, and the Son of man is betrayed into the and gave it to the disciples, and said, hands of sinners. Take, eat; this is my body. 46 Rise, let us be going: behold, he is 27 And he took the cup, and gave at hand that doth betray me.

The people condemn him,

CHAP. XXVII.

and he is crucified.

11 And Jesus stood before the governor: 31 And after that they had mocked him, and the governor asked him, saying, Art they took the robe off from him, and put thou the King of the Jews? And Jesus his own raiment on him, and led him said unto him, Thou sayest. away to crucify him.

12 And when he was accused of the 32 And as they came out, they found a chief priests and elders, he answered man of Cyrene, Simon by name : him they nothing. compelled to bear his cross.

13 Then saith Pilate unto him, Hearest thou not how many things they witness against thee?

33 And when they were come unto a place called Golgotha, that is to say, A place of a skull,

14 And he answered him to never a 34 They gave him vinegar to drink, word; insomuch that the governor marvel-mingled with gall: and when he had tasted led greatly. thereof, he would not drink.

15 Now at that feast, the governor was wont to release unto the people a prisoner, whom they would.

16 And they had then a notable prisoner, called Barabbas.

17 Therefore, when they were gathered together, Pilate said unto them, Whom will ye that I release unto you? Barabbas, or Jesus, which is called Christ?

18 (For he knew that for envy they had delivered him.)

19 ¶ When he was set down on the judgment-seat, his wife sent unto him, saying, Have thou nothing to do with that just man: for I have suffered many things this day in a dream, because of him.

20 But the chief priests and elders persuaded the multitude that they should ask Barabbas, and destroy Jesus.

21 The governor answered and said uno them, Whether of the twain will ye that I release unto you? They said, Barabbas. 22 Pilate saith unto them, What shall I do then with Jesus, which is called Christ? They all say unto him, Let him be crucified. 23 And the governor said, Why! what evil hath he done? But they cried out the more, saying, Let him be crucified.

35 And they crucified him, and parted his garments, casting lots: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet; They parted my garments among them, and up my vesture did they cast lots. 36 And sitting down, they watched him there :

37 And set up over his head his accusation written, THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS.

38 Then were there two thieves crucified with him: one on the right hand, and another on the left.

39 And they that passed by, reviled him, wagging their heads,

40 And saying, Thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days, save thyself. If thou be the Son of God, come down from the cross.

41 Likewise also the chief priests mocking him, with the scribes and elders, said,

42 He saved others; himself he cannot save. If he be the King of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe him.

43 He trusted in God; let him deliver him now if he will have him: for he said, I am the Son of God.

24 ¶ When Pilate saw that he could] 44 The thieves also which were crucified prevail nothing, but that rather a tumult with him, cast the same in his teeth. was made, he took water, and washed his 45 Now, from the sixth hour there was hands before the multitude, saying, I am darkness over all the land unto the ninth innocent of the blood of this just person: hour. see ye to it.

46 And about the ninth hour Jesus cried 25 Then answered all the people, and with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama said, His blood be on us, and on our sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my children. God, why hast thou forsaken me? 26 Then released he Barabbas unto them and when he had scourged Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified.

47 Some of them that stood there, when they heard that, said, This man calleth for Elias.

27 Then the soldiers of the governor 48 And straightway one of them ran, took Jesus into the common hall, and ga- and took a sponge, and filled it with vinethered unto him the whole band of soldiers. gar, and put it on a reed, and gave him to 28 And they stripped him, and put on him a scarlet robe.

29 ¶ And when they had platted a crown of thorns, they put it upon his head, and a reed in his right hand: and they bowed the knee before him, and mocked him, saying, Hail, King of the Jews!

30 And they spit upon him, and took the reed, and smote him on the head.
